Inspired by the wet wiping the stair carpet thread. It got me wondering what other cleaning tips i dont know and i do like to collect them Grin

So what do you do that you think others should know about?

I'm trying to think of any of my own but cant right now. Will add if i do.

Bicarbonate of soda and bleach really transforms grotty grouting!

If my socks are clean ( you know when you put on a pair late in the evening and don't do anything), I tend to swipe them on the wooden skirting boards when going up the stairs. Grin

Together in a paste or separately? Do you scrub it in or just apply and leave?

1 part bicarbonate to 2 parts bleach ( I used parazone) mix it in to paste and apply with an old toothbrush, I left it for 20 mins but it starts visibly working immediately. I asked on here recently and a poster told me this little gemSmile

Thanks dame

Also if anyone could educate me on the science behind steam cleaners and whether they actually clean i would appreciate that. I bought one recently and have used it with the concentrator nozzle for grouting and round the skirting boards (old grotty rented house in want of a powerhosing) and it just seemed to blast the dirt onto the surrounding areas, which was great as i just washed it away but when using the proper floor attachment it makes me wonder where the dirt is going?

I never use furniture spray polish for the t.v. or mirrors or anywhere else that I dust. I have one dampened duster and one dry. I wash the dusters after every dusting session. It works on stainless steel hob and cooker hood too.

Surly - I've had 2 steam cleaners and they both went back. I can only imagine some people like making work for themselvesHmm

When I use my steam mop for the floor I have to change the microfibre pads frequently because try get grubby & wet. We are no a shoes house and live in a city, plus floor is steamed weekly and spills are spot cleaned as and when so it's not filthy by any means. The grot goes onto the microfibre pads. I have loads of them (luckily). They just get machine washed ready for next time.

Surly - it is big (3m x 2m) and has a cloth on it to protect it from the cats who like to sit on it. The Hoover is the quickest and most efficient thing to get the cat hair off the large surface area.

I hoover the kitchen table too. And the stove top. And worktop.

Most surfaces actually. I believe others call it "dusting"

The crumbs end up up the hoover anyway, when you knock them onto the floor while dusting, so you you may as well get them at the source.

Sorry for typos, I'm on my phone and it is useless (not that my posts are super coherent usually).

Yes the floor pads got sodden and grubby so quickly that it was leavjng the floor very wet and i assume, dirty! I much prefer mop and bucket with boiling water, zoflora and a bit of stardrops.

Yep, I hoover most surfaces to get rid of crumbs. I also hoover the bookcases - but I am not a very frequent vacuumer, so the dust is easier to hoover off and then I damp wipe.

I hoover almost everything, just swap nozzles/ends/whatever they're called.

Actually I barely hoover at all, because someone else does the floors. I do things like doors, table tops etc.

Essential oils on radiators work better the furniture polish.

My eldest once made our entire house stink like a cake factory after using vanilla essence on her radiator. Took weeks to get rid of the smell. We ate many cakes during this time Grin

I wash the hoover once a week (as in dismantle it, machine wash the reusable filters, soak any non electric parts and pipes in a bath tub full of bleach) my sisters laugh at me, but my hoovers last longer than theirs, they don't laugh when I point that out.
