Toilets, lime scale and septic tanks

We have a real problem with limescale in this house, I have never had this problem anywhere else I have lived.

Although my toilets are clean, the bit where the water is at the bottom keeps going brown. Having scrubbed them again (just using toilet cleaner) and still not being able to get them white annoys me. I don't want visitors thinking we are grubby! When I clean them you can feel that there is something there.

The problem is we have a septic tank and I looked in Tescos yesterday and none of the limescale busting products like Mr Muscle are suitable. Does anybody have any cleaning ideas? And ideas for stopping this happening?

I got a septic tank as well. Just had a quick google around and apparently Harpic power plus tabs are safe in septic tanks. I'm going shopping in a while and I'll see if I can find them.

Oh, oh, ooooh! I know this one! I am positively evangelical about the Method loo cleaner - you can get it in tescos, or Robery Dyas, and it's in a turquoise coloured bottle for about £3. It's environmentally-friendly, and it smells of peppermint, not pine.

And best of all it WORKS! I, too, have that awful brown limescale problem, and I had tried everything before finding this. I cannot praise it enough!

Erm, are there certain cleaning products that you can't use with a septic tank?! Oops! I use Harpic Power Plus. Leave it in there overnight for a few nights & you can scrub it clean. It's really strong, so I probably wasn't supposed to use it Confused

Right have been out shopping today and I couldn't find the method cleaner anywhere but we only live in a small town. I have bought the harpic power plus tablets and will try them overnight.

I will drive to waitrose in the week and see if they have the cleaner. Although the harpic says ok for septic tanks it's probably not the best thing to use frequently.

I will update!

Have you tried soaking it in pure vinegar?

Because my electric kettle get this white hard stuff and i soak it in vinegar for a few hours and it comes right off. Everything else fail.

I know this is an old thread but in case anyone else finds there way here looking for a solution - I have to say that the only thing that worked for me was an expensive solution - we installed scalewatcher. It took a while but all the grubby looking limescale disappeared from the toilets and I thoroughly recommend it.
