any good oven cleaning tips?

My oven is beyond filthy (shame emoticon). How do I get it clean? I'm not keen on oven cleaning solutions as I find your food ends up tasting of them for weeks. Wouls a steam cleaner be a good idea? Tia

I use oven sprays but the other option is Brillo pads. Lot more work though.
