Rust spot in washing machine - what can I put on to protect?

Don't know what it was for but a little sound metal bit (like a tiny coin) has just come off the drum of my washing machine leaving a rusty patch. Doesn't affect how it works. Is there anything I can put on this to protect the drum and stop rust spreading to clothes/getting worse.

rub with wd-40 maybe - supposed to get rid of rust

pretty well anything you put on will be washed away by the hot water, detergent, and rubbing action of clothes. WD40 will wash off.

it is unusual for the inside of a drum to go rusty, they are usually made of stainless steel. It's not the door you mean? Could a bit of steel such as a bra wire have got stuck to it? Or is the drum a dull light grey of zinc-plated steel?

Thanks for your replies.

Not, it's not the door, it's the inside drum and it looks nice and shiney, not dull. The metal shaped coin that has come off has always been on the drum (not sure why), underneath leaving a rusty mark. Just wondered if there was some kind of metallic paint/protective liquid which may help.

maybe it is a stainless drum and there was a foreign object, possibly magnetic, stuck to it.

Rub the rust spot with a dry green nylon pan scourer and see if the rust comes off leaving a stainless surface.
