Vacuum cleaners

Our vacuum cleaner is ancient and doesn't actually do anything other than sound like an aeroplane taking off.

Really want one that actually cleans. Don't mind reasonable price - I hear Miele are good.

Any ideas?

TIA

have you got lots of ground-floor carpets? Pets? Muddy shoes? If so an upright will beat more of the dirt and grit out than a cylinder. Also flea and moth eggs if you are unlucky.

Cylinders are better for hard flooring, and OK upstairs where there is not so much dirt. Miele also make very good uprights, but a good upright is more complicated than a good cylinder, so more expensive. AFAIK all uprights have detachable hoses and tools now, so will do stairs and things but not so convenient as a cylinder. Some of the Bosch cylinders are as good as Miele cylinders, and a bit cheaper.

Thanks. At,the moment, we have all wood flooring and no pets, though are going to,move soon so may have carpets upstairs. Pet a possibility in the future.

Hadn't considered an upright as have no idea about attachments etc but will do,now.

with hard floors, a cylinder will suit you better.

If you later have carpets only upstairs, people will not trample mud and grit into them.

Look at Miele and Bosch cylinders, they are very good. Their cheaper models may have smaller capacity. Despite Mr Dyson, bags hold a lot of dirt and are good for preventing dust escaping.

Sebo. Love mine. 10yrs and still going. Survived gutting of house and vaccing up dusty plaster etc.

Or Miele.

Ahhhh, all roads seem to lead to Miele.

Any particular model?

budget?

Up to 200 or so for something really good that will last for ages.

Sebo! Best money I've ever spent, and exceptionally helpful customer services.

as explained, it's my view that a cylinder would suit you better than an upright.

"Which" best buy cylinders around £200 (best first):
Miele S8340 Ecoline Solution £190, scored 80%
AEG UltraOne Pets AUO8840UKPT £190 80%
Miele S8330 Solution HEPA £208 79%
Miele S6240 Ecoline £150 78%
Miele Cat & Dog TT 5000 (S5261) £189 £78%
etc
Bosch BSGL5PROGB Home Professional £148 77%
Miele S6210 Power £145 77%

you can probably see a pattern here.
