This thread spurred me on a bit and I cleaned my skirtings etc. this week. I'm a good girl smile.

I find that taking my glasses off dramatically reduces the amount of visible dirt in the house

Door frames and skirting boards get a wipe most weeks as my house is very dusty and i can see it as they are white.

The only non fitted wardrobe/cupboard with a top in my house is in the baby's room and I haven't yet cleaned it in the 3 months its been there.

Skirting boards I do, tips of cupboards were too dirty when I moved in to tackle now.. Getting a new kitchen soon so am going to start a fresh then. Must hide the cupboards from the neighbours when they are chucked or I will be outed for the slattern I truly am!

Mrspebble Sun 03-Nov-13 21:38:23

I wash the skirtings when I deep clean the floors every week or two. Tops of cupboards .. Cannot reach.. Tops of doors ..never.

Wipe lights witches etc weekly.

GemmaTeller Sun 03-Nov-13 20:26:14

What also spurred me on was going to my brothers house once and the skirting boards were thick with grime on the top bit - what the hells that all about? <boak>

Couple times a year, but I'm sure I should do it at least once a month sad

mousmous Sun 03-Nov-13 10:48:24

when the dc start writing in the dust.
well then I give them a couple of wipes and let them get on with it.

MummyBeerest Sun 03-Nov-13 10:47:35

Ummm. ..when I notice it. I'm not what you'd call detail-oriented.

GemmaTeller Sun 03-Nov-13 10:47:30

Once a month I get my 'doing' head on and in the words of my mother 'bottom the house'.

All woodwork, windows, light fittings etc. We have two dogs and I would be mortified if someone said my house smelt of dogs.

I do tops of kitchen cupboards as we are in quite an old house and have no extractor fan in the kitchen and the tops of the cupboards get sticky.

LightasaBreeze Sun 03-Nov-13 10:44:28

About once a year or so I have a good do with cupboard tops etc. Those sort of jobs are quite good to give to teenagers to earn pocket money. When DS was at secondary school the whole house got done more often as he did it. Life's to short for me to spend time wiping skirting boards weekly and dusting.
We have a 1930's house.

VeryStressedMum Sun 03-Nov-13 10:43:33

And totally agree about the sun, everything looks so bloody dirty I have to go out and come back home when it's dark.

VeryStressedMum Sun 03-Nov-13 10:41:54

I have cleaned doors, but only because they were really dirty not because it's part of my usual routine. Same with skirting boards, I have done it but not often and not for a while now.
Tops of cupboards..never. I've got enough to clean without cleaning things I can't see.

Viviennemary Sun 03-Nov-13 10:36:38

I clean things like doors and skirting boards about once every couple of years. blush. Sometimes I wipe a mark on a door if I see it. Tops of cupboards about once in 15 years.

LoisEinhorn Sun 03-Nov-13 10:35:39

Haha! Mine are buttermilk so I feel your pain.
There are 3 adults in my house, why is it only me that sees the smudgy fingerprints and splashes hmm

Old houses are a nightmare to keep clean I have decided confused.

I will do a really good clean this week as we've had two weeks of half term and not a lot done in the housework dept.

Agree that the low winter sun is a killer for making you look like you sit around watching day-time telly all the time rather than doing anything useful!

OneMoreThenNoMore Sun 03-Nov-13 10:30:58

We live in an old house so it gets dusty quickly. General dusting gets done weekly-ish. Things like skirting boards get done as I notice them or when we've got guests coming, so every month or two. Kitchen cupboard fronts, same- they are white so splashes etc are very visible. My next kitchen will definitely not have white cupboard fronts! wink

Mattissy Sun 03-Nov-13 10:29:22

Doors, with a wet wipe when I really can't avoid it anymore. Skirting boards, the same but no dirty fingers so even less. Tops of cupboards, I'm not tall enough to see, in my mind they're already very clean and dust free so no need to check!

LoisEinhorn Sun 03-Nov-13 10:24:54

I feel better grin

Tops of cupboards? Kitchen cupboards? Never.
Skirting boards get a swipe with the brush and mop when I go round the house (tiled floors throughout, grrr), doors get a wetwipe if/when I see DC gunk.
I've lived in my home a year and haven't dusted, doesn't seem to get dusty like the old one.

I'll do a deep clean at the end of this month/beginning of December before Christmas, but not the tops of cupboards, life's too bloody short.

TawdryTatou Sun 03-Nov-13 10:13:42

Erm, autumn, when the bastarding low sun shows the world what a slattern I am.

SharpLily Sun 03-Nov-13 10:13:06

About once a week usually, but since I got pregnant housework has gone out of the window and dust bunnies are taking over. Skirting boards have been done once in the last two months, and that only because Mother in Law came to stay.

fanoftheinvisibleman Sun 03-Nov-13 10:12:25

Those kind of jobs when I can actually see they are desperate ....I am very short blush
