Housekeeping

Nesting... care to add to my list?

Gerty1002 · 22/07/2013 10:18

I'm 33+3 weeks pregnant and just started my maternity leave. We've been 'scraping by' with the housework due to my job being fairly physical and tiring and DP working 50 hours per week. As a very house-proud person it has been killing me!

Now I potentially have 6 weeks to keep myself occupied with keeping my 3 bed, 3 storey former show-hone sparkling. See below my to-do list so far... please feel free to suggest additions! Non-housework suggestions also welcome.

General clean from top to bottom, first and foremost
Get to the bottom of the ironing pile
Clean windows
Polish mirrors (being a former show home means there are A LOT!)
Dust/clean light fittings
Clean/polish all bathroom tiles (3 bathrooms, all pretty much fully tiled!) and kitchen tiles
Clean skirting boards and doors
Clear out and organise wardrobes/drawers
File paperwork/bank statements etc
Take curtains to be dry cleaned
Clean venetian blinds
Clean kitchen cupboards, inside and out
Clean oven (using non-chemical eg bicarbonate of soda ofc)
Hoover matresses and sofa
Clean any marks from carpet (light cream fluffy carpet throughout eek)

Jobs I've already done since yesterday are:
Clean washing machine
Clean dishwasher
Defrost and clean fridge freezer

TIA :)

What are your plans for a nursery?

Report
Rummikub · 22/07/2013 10:53

Batch cook meals to freeze and defrost.

Rest, read, sleep.

Vivacia The nursery has been done and dusted for months haha :) we started that just after the 20 week scan. All that needs done in there is adding things to hospital bags which are almost packed and ready. Moses basket all set up in our room also.

Ah yes, batch cooking needs to go on the list, thanks!

Wash, dry and iron baby's clothes.
Buy a stack of thank you cards to send out (being overtly polite here).
Get your own clothes (feeding bras, home clothes sorted).
Keep your ID stuff in a file so you can get birth certificate readily done.
Keep batteries in camera charged
Keep coins for parking at hospital.
I can go on and on..

Baby clothes already sorted :).

Think I'll have to have a shopping trip for my clothes as bump has had a growth spurt and I've just grown out of most of my clothes! Annoying as I haven't put weight on anywhere else so size bigger won't fit right!

Keep the suggestions coming though :)

Make an online shopping list so you can get groceries delivered when the baby is here?

Report
Gerty1002 · 22/07/2013 14:23

Good idea lovelychops - I shop online quite regularly as we don't have a car at the moment, but it can take quite a while to compile a big shop, so having a shopping list ready sounds like a great plan

Add nappies etc to your list, make your life easier. I get quite exited when doing an online shop, but I'm easily pleased!
Enjoy your nesting and rest too Grin

I counted around 200 nappies in newborn size 1 when sorting the nursery yesterday - people just keep turning up with them haha. We have some in bigger sizes too. Then again, 200 scarily may only last a couple of weeks!

If you haven't already, don't open the packs of nappies in advanced. You may be surprised how quickly they move up through the sizes and often shops will let you swap sizes without a receipt.

Gerty1002 · 22/07/2013 17:18

Ooh do they, I thought we'd be stuck with those sizes once we had them! A lot are already open as they were part of a wonderful 'nappy cake' bundle that my friend made for us, but will keep the rest in the packet. Thanks, Tarka Smile

Book a hair appointment and pedicure for about 2 weeks before your due date. Might be a while before you get to the hairdressers! Very hard to cut your toe nails in the last few weeks and I have spent a fair bit of time looking at them (sitting on a fit ball!) whilst in labour so nice to have them coloured. Completely unnecessary but nice!

An empty drawer/cupboard allocated to put everything you are given for baby (clothes, toys, books) that you won't be using for the first 3 months. Also a drawer for putting outgrown things as they grow out of things at a rate of knots.

Clear out as much as possible generally around the house as baby's gather belongings quickly.

Rest, rest and rest! Having done labour 4 times it is definitely harder if you go into it tired!!

Fresh I'm not sure I could handle a pedicure... HATE people touching my feet haha. Though I'm starting to struggle with doing my feet now so i guess it's that or ask DP shudders

Also I went for lash & brow tint & shape so I look slightly less dead in the newborn photos-had baby last Mon & dh hasn't yet taken any pics tho!

Go to your local registry office & get paperwork for registering birth-you'll get child benefit form in bounty pack in hospital if u need it.

Dont iron any baby stuff-it's pointless! Make a freezer inventory & ensure there's plenty of pizza & stuff u can eat with one hand.

Make granola-oats are good for Milk supply & it's fairly nutritious. Get an area set up/thought out for feeding baby where u can have drinks and snacks within arms reach!

Make a list of where all baby items are for your dh-mine has no idea as I sorted everything & it's annoying directing him now. Ensure you have or know about everything you might need. My best kit includes

Glider chair
Breastfeeding pillow-my Brest friend
Lansinoh
Snuggle nest
Nipple shields
Mamas & papas aqua bambino bath
About 6 sports water bottles 750ml for filling & rotating
Research tv series you haven't yet seen & order, download, sky+
morrck car seat blanket

Practice putting pram up & down & doing car seat

Will post more later if I think of any!

Do get your head around resting without guilt, OP, then you'll be better placed to rest after the birth. You may feel wonderful but even so, letting yourself slow down a bit will be good for you.

I planned all of this too, I moved into my boyfriends house at 31 weeks. At 32 weeks I was up on a stool cleaning and re arranging cupboards after cleaning out the fridge age my waters broke! No more nesting! I hadn't even unpacked from the move, the nursery wasn't ready and I didn't have a hospital bag packed! Don't always assume you will go to the 40 weeks! Happy nesting!

Shop now for things you will need for yourself after the birth, as you won't be up out shopping again for a while. e.g.

Nursing bras
Nursing tops
Clothes as none of your pre pregnancy or maternity stuff will fit. Drawstring or elasticated waist are good as you will have a wobbly stomach for a while. I forgot to do this and spent the first 2 weeks in baggy tracksuit bottoms and t-shirts. I looked and felt terrible, and cheered up immeasurably when I finally got some proper trousers and a nice top.
Good quality ready meals that can be eaten with one hand. In the early weeks it can be really hard to get time to eat. DD would cry when I set her down so I could only eat if I bf her at the same time.
A sling that is suitable for newborns. It makes eating, doing chores and generally having a life so much easier!

You can have painted nails? In Spain you have to have stripped nails as you can see life-saving changes in skin-colour during birth (I forget what irhey can indicate).
I also had to remove piercings and rings. I couldn't take off my wedding ring, it was fair welded to my finger! I was allowed one last push before they'd whisk me in for cs (luckily didn't need it) and they were fretting over my ring (oh, I say!); I told them they'd have to inject an epidural in my finger to get it off!

ahem I digress.

Practise nappy-changing on a teddy bear.
Research how to bottle-feed, perhaps get some formula in (small liquid cartons) and put a bottle steriliser on your shopping list - I had planned on bf but it didn't happen, I wasn't happy with our bottles!
Pack your hospital bag.

Congratulations OP Smile

Thanks everyone, great suggestions!

I have a steriliser and bottles already as FIL bought them assuming we would ff for some reason. Handy to have though as even if bf goes well i plan to express now and again. Need to get them out and see what's what.

Alison I'm actually convinced this baby is coming early, with no scientific reason - just a feeling, hence wanting everything done! Going to do a bit of resting today though as hips are killing after yesterday's clean-a-thon!

Slings and bf pillows are something I need to look into :)
