White board marker, what will get it out?

DD has managed to get white board marker on her school shirt(s). I chucked the cheap polo shirts she had previously that she got it all over, but this is a brand new, nice shirt. Is there anything I can buy that stands a chance of getting the stuff out?

Stain Devils have worked on various stains (like blood) for me before.

I got marker pen out of a carpet by putting a babywipe on and ironing it - the marker ink went all bobbly and could be rubbed off - not sure if this would work for a shirt but might work as a last resort if no-one else comes up with anything better.

My golden rule for 'new' types of stain is a cold wash first. This seems to help loosen stains before the main wash. I have tackled white board markers yet but at least they're not permanent markers. I have encountered those and they mean the end.

My DS gets these on his school jumper WEEKLY- after trial and error of so many products I have found that cold water, washing up liquid and a good scrub before a normal wash always does the trick.

Milk! Soak the area in a little bowl of milk, scrub it a bit then repeat with a fresh bowl of milk

Ugh, DS is always covered in them...to the point where I no longer fret about getting the stain off because he'll have more on it the next time he wears it. I've tried a hotter wash, vanish bar & ace. None worked. I always buy extra polo shirts when they are on offer.

Thanks - will try out those ideas and see what happens! Probably the washing up liquid and/or milk first, since we have that in the house already.

Willing to try ironing a baby wipe if it doesn't work... :o

After I heard the babywipe tip I was expecting it to somehow soak the stain into the wipe - that didn't happen - but it went bizarrely rubbery and could be picked off the carpet. As I say, haven't tried it on shirts.

I agree with notwoo. Milk has worked for me loads of times.

My new found miracle stain remover is hairspray! Lifts all types on pen and ink then just washed out. Some times you need to repeat

Just watch as you spray though because it lifts the colour and then the colour can run again on the underside of the shirt or quilt cover etc.

Heard another tip re permanent marker ON a whiteboard - if you write over the permanent marker with a proper whiteboard marker, apparently it lifts it.

Not any use for your clothes issue, sorry!

The whiteboard/permanent pen trick does work, but not on shirts!! Don't scribble all over the shirt, op! :)

Does ariel spray lift the marker pens?! Really?! Might have to buy some!

The Ariel spray seems to work for me if you leave it on for a while and then add little bit of warm water and then rub

Asda own brand stain removal gel is Also quite good

Or a combination of the above

So, DD came home with dry wipe pen on white top last week, I scrubbed at mark with Fairy Liquid and very cold water until it mostly came out (but not completely) and then tipped some semi-skimmed milk on it before sticking it in the machine at 40 degrees with Persil. Came out completely clean with no stain!

Try getting some surgical spirit from the chemist. Put folded pad of kitchen paper under stain and then dab with pad of kitchen paper. Change underneath pad as it becomes stained. Don't rub as this may spread the stain. Once stain removed, rinse with cold water then wash as normal. Methylated spirits might also work. (Basically you need something with a high alcohol content) I guess you could try vodka or something like that if you were desperate!!

Both surgical spirit and methylated spirits stink and need to be used in a well ventilated area. Don't use near any naked flame!

White board marker on new school polo shirt, I put some baking powder on stain and then poured on a spot of vinegar until it foamed up, left for 30 seconds and then rubbed gently into the ink stain, rinsed off and it had totally disappeared.

Vodka. White kitchen roll underneath, blot it through with another piece of kitchen roll, shifting the pieces of kitchen roll each time. Then generous slosh of vodka on the mark Immediately before washing. Only works on fresh marks. Once launder d, very little shifts it.

Vodka is better than surgical spirit because ss contain ne oil, which may then leave a new stain. Meths works, but the purp le dye may stain light fabrics.

Ariel spray/Vanish spray/any bio spray is great for school dinners/tomato/chocolate/but useless for white board marker.
I think if you grabbed the shirt off the child the second they made the mark, some of these tips might work. But once they've made the mark, had a full school day and after school club, it is too late, let alone by Friday if they made the mark on Monday (and I'm not putting the machine on for one polo shirt every day of the week).

Paint remover only makes things smell of petrol.
