Dishwasher detergent that doesn't leave a taste on plastic items

Fairy Platinum are terrible for aftertaste, I've noticed. I think the Finish Quantum tabs I've just bought also have this problem (in that I noticed it on a bowl or spoon I was feeding DD with and I think they had been in the Finish wash - it's possible they had last been done with a Fairy tablet).

Have you noticed this and do you have any tablet recommendations that don't leave this horrible taste on plastic? I worry it might make my children even fussier than they are already...

I wouldn't ever wash plastic things in the dishwasher - the taste is the least of your worries IMO.

What's so bad about it? Genuinely - not a snappy retort!

We do often hand wash these items but it's useful to be able to max out the load with the children's things when it's nearing being ready to run.

lemon flavoured tabs are I think worst. Not sure if 5-in-1 are more persistent than the basic ones. I vart between Finish, and the Aldi ones that were a best buy. Both unscented.

Are you keeping the salt reservoir topped up?

I rinse off beakers and plastic spoons after using the dishwasher for DD's things. I don't always taste it but I rinse the soap suds off when doing washing up, so see it as a similar thing.

I use wilko's own and the taste seems less strong btw.

Eugene - the heat and the chemicals cause toxins to leach out of the plastic and into food and drink

I always hand wash plastics, that might be the problem. I have downgraded to
Aldi's dishwasher tablets (budgeting crazily) and find them great.

Yes regarding salt reservoir. Dishwasher serviceman that looked at our old one said it was the most important thing for maintaining the life of machines.

Thanks Taz - I'll try to limit it. Thanks for the Aldi tab tips.

I use tesco daisy powder, it's lemon scented but I only use a dessertspoon in each wash so I never smell it.

Bargainous product. 1p per wash (I worked it out, the winter evenings fly when I'm around)

I recommend Ecover tablets. I am very sensitive to smells / scents and could not bear the taste of dishwasher detergent in my food. Since I got Ecover I have washed all plastics in a dishwasher and never had any bad aftertaste. You can get them on line to save. Hope this helps

We use Aldi non-lemon ones, or 'bottom of the range' Finish are okay too, not the Quantum etc. Not good are Sainsbury, Lidl (recent change), and anything lemon scented.

I use Aldi tablets, but also do a quick wash with no detergent after the main wash on a higher temperature.
