Question about washing machine - bearings are going

We think the bearings are going - it's grumbly, rattly and makes a noise when you rotate the drum by hand, and it moves up & down more than it should. Spinning is about twice as loud as it ought to be.

I've been in touch with someone about fixing it, but I want to know if it's likely to cause further damage if we keep using it in the meantime.

We have a 2.9 y.o. and a 5 day old so we are generating a fair amount of washing at the moment!

My bearings did this. Washing machine repair man deemed it not worth repairing. It was ten years old though. Sad

I'm told that fragments of corroded metal and black grease will start contaminating your washing.

Thanks - I'll perhaps only wash urgent stuff for the next couple of days then.

It's only 3 or 4 years old. Hmm

I think you are right Piglet, some of the washing did come out a bit strange.

That happened to ours and we got black grease over loads of our clothes and had to throw them away (took me ages to realise what it was!)
It would have cost a similar amount for repairs as to buy a new machine, so i got a new machine from a company who would take away the old one (as well as disconnecting/reconnecting and testing new one...I think that was Dixons.)

I'd stop using it. Mines shock absorbers went. Drum rattled about pulled off a pipe and flooded the place.

Bosch are generally good. I got a Bosch tumbledrier from John Lewis yesterday, they took away my old one and gave me £30 discount trade in for it. I see they are doing the same for some Bosch washing machines.

JL give a standard 2-year warranty.

This is my new one. It is fab and very quiet in comparison to the old one. No noise like spinning gravel. Grin

Thanks everyone. PILs have offered to buy us a new one, but think we'll probably get this repaired as it's probably as quick as waiting delivery of a new one plus having to take it to the tip.

JL will probably take the old one away free and give you ?50 for it. Have a look at the link. You can probably get delivery in less than a week.
