Getting dog smell out of carpet

We've just moved house, and the previous occupants had a dog (big yellow thing - possibly a Labrador). The carpets smell of dog. Any ideas on how to get rid? I've already had them professionally cleaned, but the smell is still there! We're renting so replacing the carpet isn't an option. Needless to say, dh can't smell it...

you can spray with copious amounts of Febreze or Tesco's own brand at half the price.

If you have already had the carpets hot-washed there is not much more you can do. Wash the skirting boards and soft furnishings. You might find a favourite spot e.g. in front of the fire or door that needs an extra go.

Use a scented or deodorising sachet in the hoover. Sprinkle bicarb (or shake-and-vac which is bicarb with added perfume) and brush it in well before hoovering, preferably with an upright.

Otherwise open the windows whenever you can.

Get a dog and then the carpet will smell of your own dog and you won't mind a bit.

Hmm, getting my own dog seems a bit drastic. I tried shake and vac which I didn't know still existed. It now smells of dog and oranges.

Bicarb. Sprinkle on before bed, vacuum in the morning.

Try a local petshop/vets for some of their stuff. I just had to solve a wee problem on a tile floor and they recommended a spray called Totalcare that breaks down the smelly molecules. I think for carpet you may have to soak it though, so perhaps not practical on large areas.

But bicarb also might work (you might need to bulk buy!)
