Kitchen Bin Debate !

Can you survive without a decent sized kitchen bin?

My fab DH who is pretty chilled was far from pleased to return home to find out that his (beloved) bin has departed ............ ok - I was fed up of the stainless steel type brabantia thing - substantial size - as
(a) it always has finger marks all over it never mind how often you try to keep it clean
(b) DH always stuffs/crams rubbish into it so that it overflows/or bags split /rip
(c) there is nowhere to hide it in our kitchen

He keeps threatening to bring it back in from the garage where I dumped it thinking I would reuse it for keeping kindling in or holding garden stuff on the grounds that he is fed up not having a bin to put waste/rubish in when he is cooking etc.

I have put the very small "innards" of our provided food waste bin under the kitchen sink so we can put rubbish in when cooking but DH says it is not big enough. I have looked online to see if there are any fancy solutions or aesthetically nice looking bins (that don't cost silly £) but no luck so far.

Personally not sure why he is so devoted to it ??? but then whilst he is lovely he also crams anything & everything into dishwasher as if his life depended on how much he could squeeze/squash in to it !

What do you do ?

We have the slim brabantia bin so erm 30 litres I think that is plenty big enough...

I had a new kitchen fitted last year which has deep drawers under the sink, one of which should have bin compartments in but they were tiny!

We sent the drawer innards back for a refund and bought a Brabantia freestanding bin so I'm kind of with your DH here.

Could you maybe bargain that you will let him have it back if he empties it more often? You might be making a rod for your own back with a smaller bin if it needs emptying every 2 minutes.

Depends how many day's worth of rubbish he expects it to hold. I survive quite well with a small bin emptied almost daily but MIL can't find bags big enough to take a week's rubbish despite having a large bin touching the pipes under the sink.

I change the bag charity plastic sack every few days, DH also crams stuff down into the bin.

I understand it's a bin not a blackhole and has a limited capacity.

I couldn't live without a decent bin either. I have two white bins (in a white kitchen) and they blend in quite well. One is for recycling and one for rubbish... confuses visitors to see two bins (they're probably about 30l each?! - sort of thigh high when you're 5ft nothing).

Give your DH his bins back on the understanding they are emptied before they are over flowing & if they are smelly.

OP, like you, I am not in favour of big bins. I have a 12L Brabantia, which is great as supermarket bags fit it perfectly.

I recycle actively (paper, cardboard, glass, tins) and I mainly cook from scratch so I do not have much packaging to throw away. When I do, I cut the packaging in halves/quarters so as not to clutter my bin. I also compost vegetable or fruit peelings.

I empty my kitchen bin every 3 or 4 days only. On top of that, as my bin bags are fairly small, they don't fill up my outside bin very quickly either. I have a slim Council-provided bin and I only put it out every month.

I do not see myself ever having a need for a huge bin.

I swapped our brabantia stainless steel bin for a simplehuman bin in cream.

It doesn't get finger marks, blends in with the walls and units so not an eye-sore anymore, and has a slow close lid, so no more noise too

I don't like big bins. Too smelly, too heavy when you try to lift the sack out, and they get in the way.

I have a small under-the-sink jobby, the size that takes a supermarket carrier bag. I empty it every other day, sometimes every day. Next to it under the sink I have an open-topped crate that I put the recycling into (I empty that every day as it is fills up so quickly). Also a compost bin outside the back door, and a bottle-bank box tucked away in a corner of the kitchen.

There seems to be a split between bin baggers and supermarket shopping baggers. I personally would prefer to empty the bin after every time I've cooked rather than have smelly rubbish hanging around in the kitchen.

I tried without my big bin, with a bin under the sink. But I actually found it so so annoying sometimes emptying the bin 2/3 times a day! So with your DH even though big bins are a eyesore.

We have 2 bins simply because DP "forgets" to empty in and in my current condition I can't.
We have those fancy cheap from Makro sensor bins that open when you wave at them so no horrible finger marks.
We do have an epic amount of rubbish though with all DS's medical gumpfh that doesn't go in the medical waste bin. The bins forever seem to need emptying which isn't so bad except we have 5/6 houses sharing 3 bins and the council won't allocate more.

I have to say we did have a carrier bag under the sink bin thing was fab but it broke the cupboard door (crap door as it was fine in our old kitchen) we only needed to empty it once per day???

No idea how come some people have so much rubbish??? We recycle as much as we can. In our tall brantia bin we just use black bin bags and empty it every 2-3 days no food goes in there, in fact not much does so it rarely smells it's just good because it's tall so easy to get the rubbish in as it's at waist height and the pop up & down lid is easy to use, no clanky foot pedal.

Gosh, bumpstart, I'm in agreement with you. I don't understand why people would want rubbish to hang around in the kitchen for any time at all. Little bags, binned frequently, no smell, no heavy lifting, easy!

You are right. I was round at a friends house the other day though, and the bin was full, so I emptied it for her. What a hassle. It was a massive bin and I had to lug the bin bag across the whole kitchen and out the yard. When it's just a polly bag, it just flies into the wheelie bin!

In our old house, we had a big bin... I never emptied it because DH did that same as yours OP- squashed down and it all got split and rubbish would go everywhere.

In new house, I said I'd only empty the bin if we got a small one... Winner

We have one of those back of the kitchen cupboard ones from ikea (under sink cupboard) plus small trug for recycling (washed tins, bottles etc so not smelly) and food waste tiny bin (provided by council) All bins emptied at least once a day- but with a toddler in nappies, we go to the outside bin a lot anyway so it's no real hassle.

Much easier, and everyone is happy

Not a fan of big bins because of the overstuffing/split bag scenarios.
Still, we have one, and a box for recycling next to it, and a kitchen top composter for peelings, etc. which goes to the wormery every other day.

The council provides a huge recycling wheelie, slightly smaller garden waste and even smaller general waste. We're hard put to half fill the general waste each week, which is, I suppose the intention.

We have a slimline 30L Brabantia that's brushed steel so fingermarks rarely show. Looks nice enough to stand next to the fridge. Then we have a recycle box inside a cupboard. The food caddy's black so sits on the counter by the sink without drawing any attention to itself. To be honest, 30L is larger than we need as we recycle so much (as per local council requirement) but can't be bothered to get rid of it as it still looks nice.

We have a 45l which gets emptied about every 10days. It doesn't smell, because the we are veggies so no meat or fish remains.

Have had in the cupboard shopping bag bins before and they are an utter, utter pain in the arse. They are a bugger to actually get anything in to, and they need emptying every 5 mins.

We have a brabantia bin with a black plastic lid , it works well for us. I recycle plastic, tins, cans and paper.

Let him have the bin, on the understanding he cleans it to an acceptable standard and empties it regularly.
