Aga Six-Four s series range style cooker

Hi there,

I'm just looking for some feedback on these.
It is the type of aga that is like a standard
range cooker (3 ovens and a grill/ 6 ring job)
It doesn't heat your house, just a cooker.
Haven't really found much feedback online apart from
some quite negative reviews.
I really love the traditional aga appearance of
this cooker but it is expensive so I'd appreciate
hearing from people who have one/ know someone
who has one to hear how it is performing after a few years of use....

I'm looking at exactly the same questions. Where did you find the (negative) feedback?
I really fancy an Aga but want the convenience of normal ovens & induction hob. Many of the ranges I've seen appear a big 'tinny'. I'm very undecided and don't want to make a costly mistake..

I looked at them when I was doing my kitchen but was put off. Although I liked the look of the AGA these appeared to be a triumph of "style over substance". The ovens are very small and as I recall are only rated "C" for efficiency. The man who owns and runs our local AGA shop wasn't very keen on them and didn't seem at all interested in selling me one.

So after much research and deliberation (more so than when I bought my house and certainly more than when I bought my car) I went for a Britannia XG Dynasty, which was a grand cheaper than the AGA, although that wasn't the deciding factor. It has A or A+ efficiency and was recommended to me by both John Lewis and my local kitchen shop (who had no need to recommend it as I wasn't buying the kitchen from them and indeed bought the cooker elsewhere). They said Britiannia's after service is very good. The alternative was the French brand Lacanche but no-ine rated tham as highly as Britannia and I was concerned about the after sales care should there be any problems.

and a website came up for Aga Stories or Love My Aga or something
and there were some very contented buyers, but
more disgruntled buyers.
Fayerazzled Wow it sounds like you did a lot of research!
I must check out the Brittania. I haven't seen the brand here
in Ireland, Rangemaster is most popular.
But Aga make Rangemaster so I can't understand why the
Aga one would be of lesser quality than the rangemasters.
Would love just a bit of reassurance, and would go for it. It's
funny the man in the shop steered you away from it Fay....

Hi, I've just found this thread and even though it's quite old I am wondering if you ever bought one? I bought one in July 2014 and am not happy with it. Specifically the control knobs on the hob get too hot to touch when the top oven has been on for a long time, but AGA say the temps are within BSS guidelines and have washed their hands of the problem. I'm trying to find other people who have an S series to see if they have a similar problem...

Not sure if you have already purchased your six four, I have had one for eight years, don't touch it with a barge pole, you can't use large roasting tins in the ovens as they are too large, you can't use two shelve levels at at a time as the top level food hits the roof of the oven, only way is to put the bottom shelf on the floor of the oven, if you have a large joint it will still fowl the roof.
Often you have to use two ovens when cooking for two people, the self cleaning ovens do not self clean, after a while when you heat the oven you get the smell of overheated oil which can't be got rid of even when you blast it with heat as per instructions. It has taken me eight years to accept it and learn the best way to use it, buy the state of the art oven and hob instead, better value and will work.

It's been a while since anyone posted on here but I wanted to add my comments for prospective purchasers of conventional AGAs. I bought an AGA Series 6 4 in classic cream a couple of years' ago and have not encountered any of the issues referred to in other posts on here. It is a beautiful cooker (in my opinion there is nothing else quite like it on the market) and I have found that it cooks beautifully. I was expecting to have to turn down the oven temperatures, having read others' experiences, but this has not been the case. The food cooks well and promptly, with meat browning nicely. No trouble whatsoever with the size of the ovens. Mine take a large pizza / turkey etc. Bear in mind you have three ovens to use at the same time if required, so there should be no need to cram them with more than one shelf of food. It is stunning and I have no regrets shelling out the £6k for it.

I bought a house and it came with an Aga Six-Four. Ovens and hobs are good but reliability-wise it has been a nightmare. About every 9-15 months the ovens get stuck in the "on" position and the problem seems to be that the controls have melted. Aga send out an engineer who spends 2-3 hours disassembling it and replacing the controls. The whole thing costs hundreds of pounds. Both engineers report that the problem is a design flaw/inadequate insulation between the grill burners (top left) and oven elements (top right) and the controls that sit a couple of inches above. Heat from the oven/grills slowly "cook" the controls above until they fail. I have spoken to Aga and in their usual arrogant way they deny there is a problem. I will be ripping the Aga out and will not be buying another one.

We bought a four-two back in 2011. I’m really disappointed with it. We have had to replace the grill and the enamel on the hob is breaking away. It gets low usage, and I clean it properly, so it should be in tip top condition. I would not buy from Aga again. They did not offer any useful support and we had to get an independent engineer to make repairs.
Considering the eye-watering price we paid for this beast, I would hope it would serve us for a good long while. As it stands, it’s going to need replacing soon. 7 years light usage and its done for? Simply not good enough.
