Must list today, our friends have gone after a lovely brunch and now it is back to normality, although not entirely because DS1 won't be back at preschool on Wednesday as I though due to the chickenpox!

I am in the process of doing a new list of one off jobs, there are some serious areas of doom in the house that need a proper sort out, but realistically are a full day of effort each. Who knows when I will get a chance!!

Another one with a dishy that had been on continuously, at least I don't have to wash up by hand!

I am finally getting on top of the washing, something I have never managed before and I should be getting rid of the majority of the baby stuff in the next day or so. Feels like progress.

Hi Dedalus - I was on this slatterns thread a year or so ago and came back for December and am staying longer as I found it really helpful to get everything done and have a bit of company with it.

Happy New Year Ali - sorry to hear about the chicken pox. Worth getting it over and done with though. I managed to clear out the pantry with 2 kids running round. Can you set him up with some TV/colouring in while you get some stuff done?

Today I have done ZERO housework related things. But the day before yesterday I blitzed my desk and my dressing table (to make room for lovely new Christmas goodies!) and filed lots and lots and lots of recipes/pictures etc.

Well done on the pantry HMHB! DS1 is no problem, I can set him off doing playdough, or lego or anything really and he will be fine. The issue is DS2, who is almost walking at 9 months and who doesn't nap reliably during the day. Today he has had a total of 30 minutes in 2 chunks and is still bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. At this rate I shall get nothing done until he starts preschool in 2 years time!

Dedalus/Alice - good to hear from you. Slatterns dreams = too much time spent on Mumsnet. I know thats me when I think about 'DS' or 'DD' in my head instead of their names.

Ali - see what you mean re DS2, difficult at that age. High chair for a few mins peace??

The organisation thread is making me feel seriously disorganised. Although my life has changed for the better since I cleared out the pantry. One whole black bin bag of old jars etc. thrown out . I now do feel a Nigellaesque smugness when I go in there.

I did mention us on that thread so hopefully we will get some more listmakers on here.

Anyone got any ideas on how to keep our bedroom/bathroom walls damp/mould free. It is a v old house with no damp course and I think the damp just gets in all the time. We keep the windows open when we can and the heating on when its cold. What about something to absorb the damp in the wardrobe as I've noticed my shoe boxes getting a bit mildewed. Advice please.

Halfmum (great name btw) - dp bought some anti damp paint of some sort, which he's used with some success in our bathroom and kitchen. I can find out more from him if useful?

HMHB - can you get a damp course injected? Might be the most cost effective thing to do long term rather than regular redecoration/replacement of items?
We have big built in wardrobes in our bedroom which have a tendency to damp for some reason that isn't clear to me, and I'm planning to get one of those ceramic egg things to go in them - but I think they are only intended to deal with small amounts of damp rather than a major problem.

Now DH has decided to take everything out of the cabinet under the TV and reorganise it all. So Sky box, Wii, 2 computers, hi-fi etc etc. There are cables and dust all over the place.

Ah, my specialised subject. Mould.

When it's cold you need the heating on, but on low and all the time, you need to maintain the temperature of the outer wall.

You can get things like the ceramic egg which are pretty good that absorb damp. You have to remember to check them regularly as they go yuck if overfilled.

We got electric dehumidifiers for when it was really bad.

Don't dry laundry in the particularly soggy rooms and move anything that puts out heat away from the outer walls and windows. We had our tv right by the single glazed window and it just ran with condensation.

Thanks for the mould advice. Not sure if a damp course would work as I think the walls are basically rubble piled up with cement on the top?? DH thinks the issue is the secondary glazing upstairs. I will get an egg thingy for the wardrobe (it is a fitted wardrobe over the stairs and an outside wall is part of it IYSWIM.

That organisation thread is and ever so slightly scary, but I will take a proper look and steal lots of ideas when I have a little more time and the DC are back at school as I reckon there is some good stuff in there!

They don't go back until a week today, I need activities that we can do whilst there is a raging storm!!!! Agghh.

We are rather late on the thank you letters, has anyone else not done them yet? We went away on 28th, only back yesterday and I forgot to take the list with me so they are in serious need of being done NOW! Good indoor activity now I come to think about it......

HMHB - when you double glaze, as we did when we moved in, it does mean that the damp is looking for the weakest link, as it were, we have the exact same thing in our porch, now the only single glazed place and it runs with damp. I actually have to wipe it up ever day to stop the windows rotting.....
