Over-wardrobe storage ideas

Does anyone have any suggestions for neat-looking storage to go over two wardrobes like this please?

They're Ikea Aneboda wardrobes in a birch finish, but it doesn't look as though Ikea do anything suitable in the same range.

The space to fill is maximum 60cm height, 162cm length and 50cm depth and we'd like to utilise as much of this gap as possible.

(It's dd1's bedroom which she'll refill with an unbelieveable amount of stuff again when she returns from uni - we've managed to get rid of four full binbags since she's gone.. I was itching to get in there to clear it out)

i used hat boxes, or big boxes that look like hat boxes, you can get some really pretty one, mine were round, not so good for utilising space but you can get square/rectangle boxes that are pretty and do the same job. most big deparment stores sell them i think :)

Thanks - I've seen some pretty boxes in TK Maxx, and that's definitely a consideration, but I'm hoping for something that might fit into the space more effectively. If I can't find it, I'll go with your suggestion though 4madboys.

Why not make your own boxes from old cardboard boxes, folded from giant boxes to the right size, then use decoupage to make them funky and more durable too. Any old thin paper will do for decoupage, then when it looks right, a coat of varnish will keep it easy to dust although if you make it the right size there will be nowhere for dust to goGrin.
It will only take an evening, giant boxes are easy to come by, and you'll have something unique that meets your needs.

Somebody posted some good suggestions on a thread I started. Wooden ply boxes. Haven't got any yet as still decorating the hallway, but they look good.

Here's the thread.

Thanks all - very much like the look of the wooden boxes with lid.
