Black bits coming off iron

The ironing thread has just reminded me, whenever dp uses the iron (I sadly do not iron much) it leaves little black bits everywhere - not sure if they're coming from inside the iron? It looks fine from the outside but it was cheap. Does anyone know what it might be and how to get rid if them? Thankyou!
