Naming Socks

DS is about to start secondary school the school want everything named, and of course there is much more potential for things to get lost at secondary school.

Does everyone else name socks? I'm really not feeling inclined to do it, except perhaps rugby socks that cost £9.00 a pair.

If so, how do you do it? I have those fabric name tapes but if I sew them on then they will either be puckered or stop the socks being stretchy where the label is.

What do I do??

For sports socks, rubgy etc I have bought iron on tapes. sometimes i use the sew on with socks, but the iron on are so quick.

I've never labelled socks, though if I'd had to buy £9.00 ones I might have made an exception for them. I take the view that "everything" doesn't include anything I don't care about if they do manage to lose it.

My mum used to sew name labels to my socks and they were really scratchy and irritating. I didn't bother with my DC's socks. For posh rugby socks you could write the initials on the soles with a magic marker or laundry pen.

use a sharpie pen to write the name on the sole.

If you want to use fabric name tapes on socks, fold the tape in half, then just sew the two ends on like a tab. Much quicker and won't go wrinkly.

I wouldn't bother for regular socks, maybe rugby ones though.

That reminds me, I have a heap of nametapes to sew on!

I did that fold it over and sew the tape in a loop on the outside of ds's rugby socks near the top so that when they are folded over they're hidden and don't scratch his little leggies.

I sew a few stitches of coloured thread into the toes of my DC's school socks. A different colour for each DC!
Not exactly a label, but at least we can tell who the mountain of black socks (including DH) belong to!

I used name tags for one set of uniform and then it was permanent marker! Teach your children to tuck socks into shoes when they take them off-less chance of misplacing:)

My DS socks cost £10:50 for one pair. I will definitely be labelling them with sew on and marker pen.

He's 12, but his socks are £9 a pair more than his stupid shirts cost, so I take labelling seriously.

we had fabric labels

my mum folded the label in half, and folded the blank bit with no letters under the label, and then did a few stitches along the (very very) narrow end of the label at the top of the sock.

Our rugby socks folded over at the top, so the name label could sort of go under the flap.

DC has black M&S socks this year (going to secondary), so I buy a pack of 5 pairs and renew each term, put any losses down to fate

I've also had to shell out ££s for white indoor and red rugby socks.

As he won't bother looking for a name tape I'm going to write his name on the sole with laundry pen.

Or sew them directly on DS 's legs
