Steam cleaners - do you have the knack?

I bought one years ago, I tried to steam clean the tiles in the bathroom but just found it all wet, hot and cumbersome, and not very effective. So it lives in the garage, unused.
Is it worth another try as my kitchen walls need a bloody good clean? Are there any magic tips to get the most from this machine?
