I used to have use of 2 chest of drawers, a wardrobe and top cupboard. Now I have only got use one chest.

Tiffany that sounds heavenly. Dh dreams of the day we hire a skip and put about 50% of the contents of the house in it. We would all be a lot happier if we could do it.

Evenstar what is your planned approach? I am following a flylady thread but not quite getting as much decluttering done as I need to as I keep going over the same area every day (it builds up that quickly in this house).

I am a ditsy cleaner/declutterer. I whizz around chucking stuff and then looking around as if I have done nothing!

I can't give you the magic answer as I am struggling with this myself. Flylady has a 27 fling or something like that, where you grab a bin bag and just chuck out 27 items and get them out of the house really quickly.

You could try doing that every day.

She also advocates getting several bags or boxes and going through an area and picking up stuff which is not in "a place" and deciding whether it is an item to keep, sell, charity shop, recycle or bin. If it is being kept you have to find a home for it straight away or reassess your decision.

You could try doing this once a week.

After a few years weeks, you will be living clutter free apparently.

We could just do a bit of decluttering and motivate the others on the thread by telling each other what wonderful decluttering work we have done?

I started a pre move sort out at the weekend. I found and threw out all my gcse course work (I'm 33) but boy it was tough. Reading all these essays about stuff I used to know when I was 16 that I've forgotten I ever knew

Anyway next step it to bite the bullet with all my size 10 clothes. I've nit been a size 10 for 6 years

I am the worlds worst hoarder. I had boxes of cassette tapes (no cassette player, not since about 1996

Oh and shoe boxes full of little notes written in class at school. I read a few and cried and cringed in equal measure

cd's and videos went today.....no point keeping them!!

i did garage clutter and garden clutter...had decluttered house few weeks ago and moved it into garage....so it all went today.

kids enjoyed breaking down old bed and some boxes.

My mothers house would give you all nightmares.She had over 120 clocks-on every surface,little corner shelf units on the landing,shelves along the radiator, in the bathroom and toilet. Ugly little novelty clocks with nasty little travel alarm faces.
And none of them told the right time! Imagine,you wake up,seven clocks on the bedside table,all different times.
I made her get rid of 80.So she's still got 40.
Before was plants.
Cookery books.
Cruet sets.
Teapots.
She doesn't even buy nice ones,she just indescriminately collects and hoards.
Aaargh.
(BTW its her right to collect crap little trinkets but she always complained the house was untidy.
