Photo storage

Hi, just wondering how you store your photographs? I have lots that will never go into albums, and i was thinking about storing them in boxes. I don't know how important it is to have acid free or whatever. I was wanting to use IKEA kassett boxes, does anyone know if this will ruin my photos???
