How do I clean my light pull string in the bathroom?

Tried searching but don't really know what the light pull string is called so kept getting advice on pullups!
Any ideas? Have inlaws arriving at weekend so could be on here a lit asking for advice! TIA.

I replace mine every now and then, new string and fitting only costs a couple of quid from a DIy store and very easy to do. Or if it is long enough cut off the dirty bit.

Unscrew at the top and untie. Pop in wash with 60s. :)

Cut it seems to be the way forward with least effort, thanks! Saves getting the bleach out (which is what I was planning to do except have no idea what to do with bleach...)

Have replaced it in the past, myself, not knowing what hideous germs lurk on it! Just checked and my current one has a connector thingy about a foot below the ceiling box. Looks like you should be able to buy the connector from a hardware shop. Or just use a regular knot after cutting the old string. Or something imaginative to hide the knot with a bead from the DC's craftkit. Make the replacement look deliberate by choosing some interesting string/ thread. You can always replace it again when you get bored. I would rather do this, myself, than open up the electic box on the ceiling (seems dangerous to me!)

Or you could wipe it down with some weak bleach solution.

You could also thread beads up the first six inches or so of it to hide the grubby bit.

Kim and Aggie did this on How Clean Is Your House... they soaked cotton wool in bleach and then wrapped it round, securing it with cling film...

Life is a bit short for that sort of malarkey though. I'd replace it...

Thank you ladies, I haven't actually put beads on mine (yet), the idea came to me as I was reading the thread.

However I did get a damp flannel and a bit of liquid soap yesterday and gave the string a thorough scrub and it has come up beautifully clean!

I know I'm abit late with this but it's saved me so much time it would have been selfish to keep it to myself!

Paint it lightly with a non matt white paint. Any grime wipes straight off and still looks new 4 years down the line!
