Help me with my real Christmas tree

Disclaimer: Apologies in advance if these are daft questions !

I've never had a real Christmas tree in my own house, but this year I want to get one for our main living room, and need some advice.

Are there any particular types that are best, i.e. will shed less?
What is best for holding it in place? I remember my Mum years ago keeping ours in a bucket of sand, but imagine there is a better way of doing it?
Is there anything I should do to reduce the needles falling off? We have a wood burning stove in the room, so will be quite warm, expecially if this weather persists.

Info n different types of trees here. I usually go for a Fraser fit myself!

I have a stand that holds water which I try and top up regularly. I got it from homebase I think.

When I get my tree, I usually saw a little bit off the bottom, put it in the stand, pull the branches down and then leave it for a few hours/overnight to settle.

Nordman are very good for not dropping. Give it 24 hours or so in a big bucket of water before you bring it in, if you can, then stick it in a stand that holds water. Crawl under it to top up every day. Ours goes near a radiator, which is not ideal, so I put a bowl of water under the radiator to make the air a little less dry. Happy Christmas!
