Turmeric stained toilet - help!

I couldn't find the domestic slatterns topic, so I'm hoping someone here can help me.

I made a curry, and there was some leftover sauce (no bits) so rather than pour it into the bin, I flushed it down the loo.

Now, below the waterline is all stained yellow, and the toilet-brush isn't helping. I think boiling soapy water would do the trick, but how do I do this?

It's bright yellow and looks awful.

bleach is your friend.

Methylated spirit - the carotenoids which color turmeric are soluble in solvents like methanol, so it removes the stain. I use methylated spirit on turmeric and paprika stained tableware.

Bleach may work above the water line, but not sure how effective it will be below.

I've tried bleach, but it hasn't worked. It's greasy on the porcelain under the water line.

I thought it was a genuis idea to pour the leftover sauce down the toilet .

Where would one buy methylated spirit - B&Q?
I'm snowed in at the moment too, but there's no hurry - I'm not expecting my in-laws!

harpic limescale toilet cleaner budges most stuff - could try that

cif and fairy as the detergent will break down the grease line and then bleach afterwards.

I'm assuming it's a normal white ceramic toilet bowl, yes? So it shouldn't stain, because your plates don't stain when you eat the curry off them. Therefore the stain is sticking to the limescale and harpic limescale cleaner should shift it. If all else fails, empty the water out of the toilet by hand using a disposable plastic cup and fill with vinegar or squirt with Limelight.

Well that's my theory anyway.

I think (fortunately and unfortunately) turmeric is broken down most effectively by sunlight - certainly that's my mum always said and she's had a LOT of turmeric stains on worksurfaces to contend with. It does seem true - the stains fade quite quickly in open light... not sure how that helps you with your toilet dilemma!

Thanks everyone - I scooped out the water, and scrubbed it with boiling water, bleach and washing-up liquid, and it's mostly all gone.

DilysPrice, that's an interesting point about plates not staining, but I have no limescale here - we have very soft water. I'll be examining my plate the next time I have a curry.

Anyway, lesson learned.
