Bedding - do you use a top sheet?

Hi all,

My DH and I have just bought a new bed and I need to buy linen. (old bed was a double, new bed is super king) It's going to be pretty costly starting from scratch on the linen front which got me thinking whether I should be using a top sheet or not.

My mum always made the beds with a top sheet, but then I know loads of people who don't, they just have a bottom sheet and sleep directly under the duvet.

Is it just a preference thing?

We have the duvet in a duvet cover and sleep directly under that, unless it's really hot, in which case we sleep under a sheet, with no duvet.

We use one in the winter - seems to make it that bit more snug.

Assuming your duvet has a cover on it, why would you need a top sheet?

No - I find it makes me colder in bed because it stops the duvet settling round me. Also my feet get tangled in it which annoys me.

Unless you are going to change your top sheet more regularly than the duvet then you don't really need one.

thanks everyone for your replies. When I lived at home (many years ago) I always had a top sheet but nowadays we tend to just sleep under the duvet (yes it always has a cover on it).

I am currently browsing the web for bedding options (sheets/duvet sets, do I get throws/cushions etc...) when I suddenly wondered whether not having a top sheet is a common approach.

I know my parents use a top sheet so they cut down on washing the duvet cover, but I figure it's not much more effort washing a duvet cover than a sheet, so why bother? Agree, it gets tangled up!
