Hello, i currently live in Dagenham and am looking to move quite far out, i'm on home swapper and have been offered to view a property in M15 area of Manchester, one of the reasons i am looking to move is because my 15 year old son suffers with mental health and the area i live in has no opportunities and he is in a bad crowd, his health is improving and i would really like a fresh start for us both, my biggest concern is moving from one rough area to another, does anyone reside there or know the area please? any information would be greatly appreciated. TIA x

M15 is Moss Side and Hulme. It is pretty much an inner city area. Do you know exactly where the house would be in this postcode or the name of school? I would start with finding out more about the school.

Property prices and rent in this area will be one of the cheapest in Manchester. There has been an improvements on housing in the area in recent years and new houses built which I think are mainly let by housing associations.

I don't know the area that well, I'm afraid. Have you looked at which local school he would go to? Perhaps read the OFSTED report and try to find out as much about that as possible. Would there be a chance fit you to visit the area before you make a decision?

This is the problem, the education department have really let him down here, he has not attended school for over 2 years (honestly, the trouble i've had!) so would be looking to get him into some sort of college or apprenticeship, it really is a big decision to make and i dont want to be impulsive, it also concerns me that the person who wants to move is so eager to get things going without having seen my property, thanks for the advice, i will continue to do some research on the area x

I'm sorry to hear about the education system, it seems very unfair. It's a big decision to make to another part of the country without seeing it so I would find out as much as you can before making any final decision. I would say you'd have to be sure that overall it would improve the situation. Good luck.

I hear alarm bells TBH.

I’m not sure inner city anywhere is your best plan.

What areas are you advertising for?

Hi, i wanted to be relatively close to a university so i can continue my studies, ideally i'd love to move Brighton way or any surrounding areas but no one wants to come to Dagenham from there, cant think why lol, Manchester appealed to me as my son spent time in a hospital in Bury and the level of care was fantastic, also i feel the northerners are just so much more friendly and laid back! (could be wrong!)x

If you look at it demographically, any where with a decent sized Asian community, might throw up swappers wanting to come to London, East london in particular and maybe even Dagenham specifically. That’s your best (although not only) chance. So northern cities do make more sense, in terms of the size of the pool than Brighton.

Have a look at Birmingham and Sheffield as well they have bigger social housing stocks.

Birmingham in particular is worth a look if they do your subject there because it has the biggest proportion of council housing in any urban council area, I believe, the quality is not at all bad, and a lot of it is street property. (In contrast Manchester social housing is really quite poor.)

Another route you could take is to get a place on a course and then apply straight to the housing list of the local council there using your “Right to Move” rights.

BTW you can use Check My Street and Illustreets to research specific postcodes.
