Homework year 1

My 5 year old nephew lives with us and is on the SEN register. He has been given 11 homeworks to complete in 4 weeks alongside his reading book. 3 maths, a homework table to choose any 4 out of 16 & 5 spellings to be written 5 times each so 25 written words a week for each week of this term. If he does the recommended 10 mins a night for his age he will take 7 days just to complete writing out his 10 times table. His school is an academy and a very good school but how do i factually back up my view that this is too much... or is this the normal amount??

It sounds an excessive amount to me. My DD only had reading books and a maths game in Y1, and the occasional maths or comprehension worksheet in the final term.

I don’t think you have to back up your view with evidence. Explain to the teacher that it’s too much for him to cope with, and make a revised plan with the teacher for which bits should be prioritised.

I agree with Gin. It seems too much for 5 years old.
At out school all the homeworks in reception/KS1 were not compulsory. Teacher insisted we stop if child found it distressing/struggling.
I think you should talk to teacher and come up with some plan/compromise/ or just do whatever he can, etc.
