How/where to do GCSE science practicals in London when homeschooling

Hi,

I have a boy just started year 10 and doing triple science. I have a science background myself but not the equipment I need to do the science practicals. Has anyone else (especially in London) found a way to do this?

Thanks!

I think most home schooled kids do iGCSE as it isn't possible to do the practical element of GCSE.

You'll be better asking on HE FB groups. Where we are science practicals have been arranged via a private sector provider and in uni labs, so it is doable, but we're not in London.

There's a lot of information here: he-exams.wikia.com/wiki/HE_Exams_Wiki There are links from there to a Yahoo group and a Facebook group to discuss these subjects in more detail.

You also might like to ask on a local list; are you on any?

Thanks WeAreGerbil and Saracen. I've asked to join several London Facebook groups and am waiting to (hopefully) be accepted.

As Titchy says, you do IGCSE sciences, not GCSE. The syllabuses are very similar but without the practical endorsement. You can still do the practical activities at home though - many of us do. Tbh you can cover much of the syllabus with cheap / improvised equipment, and some home ed groups run science classes where they do practicals.

Although new GCSE sciences don't have a practical exam as such, the exam centre has to certify that they have offered you the chance to carry out practicals on their premises, and very few would allow this.

Lots of info on the Science page of the HE Exams wiki .
