Coloured masonary paint

we live on a terraced street with most of the houses painted. Ours is red at the moment but many of the neighbours have painted theirs over lockdown and the majority are now various shades of grey.
I find all these grey houses so depressing and want to paint ours a brighter colour. What colour would be best to complement the grey neighbours and inject a bit of colour without being gaudy? I'm thinking purple or yellow but can't decide. Painter is starting this week so need to decide quick Smile

Well purple and yellow is as gaudy as it gets op. I’d struggle to think of a gaudier colour to be honest.

What about a nice pastel pink or blue

I want to see your house.

There are literally no houses like this where I live. It's all ex council roughcasr or new build.

I support your purple or yellow OP!!! Gaudy is just a judgy pejorative term for colourful, if you want colour go for colour Smile

I feel like yellow is more universal
/accepted as a house colour but perhaps more difficult as a backdrop for greenery/flowers than purple would be, IMO, depending on what tone of yellow you go for. Also yellow might show dirt more than purple. I think both colours complement grey well but purple would blend in a grey street more whereas yellow would contrast.

Purple might go over red easier as well?

I’m years away from being able to paint the outside of the house (and will have to battle DP for anything other than white), but I’m currently thinking sage green, just to throw an alternative in there!

The first pic is what it currently like, not my house but almost identical colour situation. The second is the purple im thinking but I also like a dark plum colour.

sage green is a lovely colour, that is an option! So sick of grey everywhere, just want a pop of colour. There is no greenery at the front as it is straight onto the street.

Just a heads up - have you checked local regs - I believe in some places you are not allowed certain colours!
I think I'd go a warm tealy-blue in your situation because it would go with all the greys but still look colourful.

Love the teal in the picture, looks great with the grey. DH will love me bringing another colour option to the table! Its taken me 10 years to talk round from just painting it red! No regs as far as I know, as far from as a conservation area as you can get Grin we are within shouting distance of a football stadium and before the grey invasion there were many different coloured houses. Will check it out though.

Like this also, but obviously won't have the same effect on a victorian terrace with no wildflower meadow at the front!

Ooh that’s nice giletrouge.

The only thing about dark purple is finding the right shade, so it’s definitely purple, sometimes on houses they look more burgundy than purple.

Love that purple farmhouse zigzag, I’d go for that on a grey terrace street

If your house is like the one in the terrace picture you posted, there is still opportunity for greenery there though.

I prefer the deep purple to the paler lilac zigzagbetty.

Have you considered green?

I'd go green or blue. I hear you on the miserable grey, especially when people use it practically everywhere.

A few big houses round here have been painted grey and in my mind they look like battleships and it feels unwelcoming

Obviously it’s a matter of personal preference etc etc

Sage green is a lovely colour and very elegant. It is also less likely to put off future buyers.

Next to grey thought would need to make sure their was sufficient yellow tone in the green, otherwise it could end up looking grey itself.

I think that could be it! Not as in your face as the deep purple and I can still have the purple on the door! Now to buy the paint before DH changes his mind and buys brick red Grin

Love the teal house!

Our house is painted red, I'd love a different colour but our road is either brick or painted red.

Went for the middle colour for the bricks and the purple for the door in the end if anyone is interested Grin thank you for all your lovely input, I was very indecisive! Flowers

It's BEAUTIFUL!
I suggested teal - any negative shit, send 'em over to me, I'll sort 'em out...
No, really, it looks fabulous. How did you get it done so FAST! I'm impressed...Smile
It's like a summer sky - how could anyone not like it?

It reminds me of the seaside. How much is it approximately to get a terrace painted? The one I'm buying is Very Tired Dark Cream and I'd love to brighten it up!
