We have a Victorian house and even though I liked the look of bigger louvres, the rep suggested smaller ones as they were more with keeping with the age of the house.
He also suggested the vertical "rod" as it would be easier to open or close the louvres.
I wish I had stuck to my original plan. Especially in terms of the rods. They make it awkward to clean the louvres.
We had some fitted in our bedroom and when closed they let in more light than I thought, so we did still have curtains too (I do like to sleep in the total dark though).
Saying all that though, I'm happy we have them and they are surprisingly good at keeping the cold out.

I loved the shutters in my old house.
soo practical, letting light in whilst keeping nosey neighbours out. or keeping light out.
cleaning was easy with a fluffy sock despite the vertical rod.

1940s semi detached red brick here. I've shutters in all my bedrooms and bathroom. No curtains.
I tilt one of the louvres to close each section. Can have them open as pic or fully closed.

I love the brightness yet privacy of them during the day as our windows are very low to the floor in each room.

The bigger the window, the bigger louvre you can have. Big louvres look odd on small windows. Personally I like the central rod as they can look a bit like 70s louvred wardrobes IMO. If you have sash windows definitely split them half way so you can have the top fully opened and the bottom closed. The company mine came from could install black out blinds behind the shutters if you need complete darkness. I really love my shutters! But you need to have the right windows for them to look good.

stripeypillowcase A fluffy sock?! Excellent idea for cleaning, do you put it on your hand puppet style?

I love mine. Victorian house, bay windows. We've got 76mm louvres with an internal tilt mechanism (so no rods) - I wanted a clean look. Ours are full length with sets of louvres above and below a break in the middle - you can have upper and lower shutters that open independently but you end up with a lot of frame and they only really work if you've got somewhere to fold them into when they're open (so a square bay, basically).

Love ours, we're in a modern house and they look so much better than curtains. We don't have the rods as wanted a cleaner look.

Thanks everyone I don’t think I want rods and hopefully can avoid having curtains, I can’t imagine where I’d fit the curtains. The neighbours have some so they must work in a modern house
