Which neutral colour for walls and carpet?

Hi

We've just bought a house and have a tight budget. The house is really dated and we need to replace all carpets and get the walls painted. I'm thinking of being really boring and just using the same carpet and same colour paint throughout the house. Which colour pain and carpet would you go for in this situation?

I didn’t want to read and run. I have never had the same colour carpet all the way through. Homes under the Hammer showed a house with white walls and a mid grey carpet. Which looked ok though I am sick of seeing everyone doing grey. Look for carpet at a large carpet dealer not necessarily a national brand look local. They will often do a deal for you. Smaller shops will let you take samples home which will give you an idea.
Paint: I would go for white or an off white like Dulux Natural Hessian. It changes according to the light.

I'm doing similar.

I like Dulux Polished Pebble and Albany Engraved stone. I'm going to have a grey/beige carpet with a fleck.

Timeless by dulux is a good choice for this. It’s an off white that works in basically every room. We had it in or old house and just changed the colours of the curtains/other accessories.
