Rugs... Size, colour, on carpet?

I fancy trying to bring together our living room bit by putting in a nice rug. We have warm beige carpet, with some cranberry in the walls. Is there much point in putting down a rug? Esp as I can't think of any colour other than deep beige or cranberry and I think cranberry would be a bit much. I keep reading that rugs look better being big rather than floating in the middle of the room so it'll have to be right as it'll likely be expensive! I was thinking a shaggy type rug, the furniture is dark and I tend to like natural warm textures. I'll see if I can get a picture.

Are you thinking of a plain rug or patterned?

I think patterned look good as you can bring together your main colours, and introduce some others to give your room a bit of a lift. Rugvista and Wayfair have lots of options for inspiration.

Something like this? Or if you don’t like traditional, you can filter searches for more contemporary styles.

I think plain would be safer, I'd rather have something that will fit if I changed the colour scheme in the future.
