Has anyone ever colour washed a wall? With pic

I want to paint one wall in our very boxy living room (behind the tv) a gorgeous blue but i dont want a 'flat colour - I want it to have a bit of texture, like in the attached pic. I want to avoid the 80s sponge /rag rolled effect if possible and I'm wondering if colour washing will work, I.e diluting the paint with water and brushing it on quickly...anyone ever tried this, or anything similar? I've got a bee in my bonnet and want to do it this weekend!!

Interesting idea! I have a few decorating books that go into detail on this but as you say they are of a certain vintage.
Why not give it a go? The worst that can happen is you end up painting over it in a flat colour. Could look interesting
