Vertical radiators.... advice needed

Has anybody had vertical radiators fitted?

DP is under the impression that they aren't as effective as normal placed radiators due to the fact that heat rises & the top half of the vertical radiator won't heat any space apart from on the stairs / landing at top of the stairs ( I've had one fitted in my hallway at the bottom of the stairs )
