Furniture dilemma, wwyd?

I currently have brown oak furniture, tv stand, dining table, coffee table. It's really solid and good quality but I'm sick of it and it's starting to look a little dated. I'd like to replace it with painted white or grey furniture but don't have the money right now.

In the meantime I desperately want a sideboard for my bare looking dining room and could probably stretch to getting just a sideboard, but, my dilemma is, do I get one in the colour I want, and it won't match. Or do I wait until I can afford to replace the other bits?

Or do I get one to match the other furniture and just put up with it?

Could you strip the other pieces and repaint until you can replace?

I'm not sure, I've suggested that to dh but he didn't seem to think it would look any good. Maybe I'll try and find out more about that.

If your furniture is solid and still good to use, it's really easy to sand it down and repaint. Much much cheaper than buying more, better for the environment and very satisfying to know that you've done it yourself.

If you use the Rustoleum Chalky Furniture Paint, you don't even have to sand terribly thoroughly, just take the surface off. I've used the paint for all sorts of things (I slightly watered it down for a couple of pieces) and it's great. Lovely finish.

If it's solid wood, rub it down and paint it. Buy a second hand sideboard and do the same

Paint it, or get someone in to do so. Have seen "one stop refinishers" recommended on other threads on here - have a look at their Facebook page. Not used them myself but reviews seem good. They spray kitchens and other furniture items anywhere in the country. I bookmarked them so I can get my wooden kitchen revamped when we've finished building work. I was quoted around £1000 incl VAT.

It's really easy to paint furniture if you are just going plain white. I bought pine bedside tables for £5 each and pained. Also got a blanket style box for £5. I used little greene. Really nice to paint with. Primer and then eggshell.

I think the coffee table and tv stand are veneer, though googling it can still be painted.

Dh isn't keen on the idea.

Has anyone got any before and after pics?

I really dislike rustoleum chalk paint. The finish makes it very hard to wipe down and I don't find it remotely hardwearing. I use F&B eggshell paint in a Dulux ultimate primer (means you don't have to sand anything down as sticks to everything).

I don't have any befores if what I have done sadly.

Look into frenchic furniture paint - you don't need to sand or prime and the reviews are great. I've not used it myself though, so no pics, but I've heard good reviews!
