Window coverings - too much choice

Oh wise and practical people! I have UPC dg windows - and patio doors. Wondering how best to make the rooms nice (colour/pattern) and keep out the dark/sun depending on time of year. If you had the choice of roller, venetians or romans - which way would you go and why?

I would always for with venetian blinds if I had the choice for three reasons:

  1. They're classic, won't need replacing when you redecorate (assuming white or wood)
  2. More control over the amount of light let in.
  3. I'm a huge fan of the light/shadow patterns they provide :)

Having bought my house years ago, ripped out all the ugly roller blinds, got Venetians put in and now have never regretted anything so much! The cleaning is just painstaking, every slat (and they were the smallest, darkest slat Venetians ever). They have also cracked in places. All the reasons @RetiredNotExpired has given are valid; the control over the light is second to none; the lighting they give is brilliant and they will match anything. So if you don't mind cleaning they are the way to go. But get the widest lightest slatted Venetians! I hate roman blinds, they look like a half-arsed attempt at a blind.
