How to furnish cheaply

I am moving into my first unfurnished house in a few weeks and I want some tips how to furnish cheaply.

Try freegle and freecycle, charity shops and house clearance shops.

Definitely free ads like mentioned above or charity shops, if you like painting stuff then you can upcycle them and make them unique

Mention it to friends and family and you'll probably get offers of various bits and pieces. Nothing will match but you can gradually replace stuff rather than buying everything at once.

Also charity shops, gumtree, etc.

If you're going on freecycle or freegle, be specific in what you ask for and say please.
For example, ask for a dining table and chairs in one wanted post, and put a separate post for bedside table or sofa or whatever, instead of just asking for furniture.

Gumtree or similar - and take your time. You don't need everything straight away, and it's worth waiting to get the right furniture for the right price. And a can of paint can jazz anything up.

Our facebook selling pages often have cheap furniture.

British Heart Foundation is worth a shot too.

I have a local FB group: PlaceName Sell and Swap. In fact there are a couple. Always great stuff dead cheap. Try and see if there's one of those?

My local facebook page is great, loads of people give stuff away to the first response. They just dont want the hassle of selling or tipping it, you’d have to be able to collect stuff though

Ebay is good for anything you can collect yourself like dining chairs

Of you let be known that you happily accept second furniture, you will be offered loads of stuff.
Also try Freecycle, charity shops and boot sales.
Our local recycling centre now has a shop, might be worth checking if yours does.
And get handy with a paintbrus h!

Ikea then gradually replace as and when you can afford it with more solid and long lasting pieces

You can buy a new dining table for £40 there.

Or, if you have time, eBay and 2nd hand selling sites. FB does these really well imo.

Second hand/ charity shops. I have a ten seater solid oak dining room table for £200!!

I had a sofa for my sewing room for £45... lovely thing.

Meh to ikea and Argos. They look so cheap. You can get good quality stuff for cheaper if you buy used, depends what style you like I guess.

If you have access to a van so can collect try a furniture auction. Much cheaper than anywhere else. Last one I went to there was a decent three piece suite which could have gone for £3 plus a buyer fee of £2. No one bid so it went to a local charity to sell off. It would have cost £50 there.

It will pretty much be brown furniture from an auction but if you paint it, you will personalise it and make it feel either lighter and/or more colourful.
