Help, how to choose a single mattress?

The last few weeks I have been trying to choose the right kind of mattress for my 4yr old dd. I have narrowed it down to either plain inner spring or a pillow top inner spring mattress. Has anyone got a pillow top and is it supportive and comfortable. I have heard mixed reviews on them. I always imagined that they would be very comfortable but have read reviews of people having sore backs and feeling too hot. What sort of mattress did you buy for your children?

Also, has anyone had experience with pocket spring mattress in a box?

I just got a mattress from John Lewis for £60! I just thought there will probably be wee / sick accidents on them at some point.

I got the £60 John Lewis mattress aswell - and also a really good mattress topper which makes it the comfiest bed ever!

Thanks for the replies. I probably should have mentioned that I'm in Australia and can't buy same brands. However, I did check out John Lewis mattress to see if it was available in Australia too, but it isn't. Problem is that so many mattresses in Australia have so many negative reviews. It's hard to find a decent one that will last more than a year. When I finally found a decent mattress with no negative reviews it wasn't delivered outside of Sydney, NSW. So, I wasn't able to purchase one. I have found another with great reviews on eBay. It has a eurotop (pillow top). I'm not sure if pillow top mattresses are too soft and unsupportive for children but think I'll give it a go and see how she sleeps on it.

We've got a couple of these mattresses from Ikea, that are Which Best Buys and appear to be available in Australia. They're very comfortable!
