Dinner service recommendations!

Apologies for perhaps the most boring MN thread today.

We need a new dinner service. We have a dark blue Denby one which was wedding gifts almost 20 years ago, it's lovely quality and has lasted extremely well but the blue is not really my taste any more and it's heavy. About 4 or 5 years ago we bought some new stuff from the Andante range at M&S

Very disappointed in the quality. It's chipped, and all of the bowls and plates have marks on them, probably left by cutlery.

So we need a new one. Need 6 x large plates, 6 x small plates and 6 x bowls. Or possibly 8 of each. Has to be round, white, fairly plain. Don't want something super-cheap which is going to be poor quality, but on the other hand don't want to be spending £30 per plate.

Denby is very sturdy. Or you could try one of the other major brands.Perhaps it's a case of looking in outlets or on sale? I did once find a set that was heavily discounted- like 70%+ off for Denby in Debenhams (mind you, a few years ago).

I'm a charity shop volunteer and I totally agree - but have been looking for ages and not found anything! We're awash with 1970s brown/yellow sets and vintage chintzy sets, but the only one I saw which was any good was a Noritake one - lovely quality but not dishwasher proof.

Hoping for bargains in the post-Christmas sales.

We had Rosenthal Thomas for our China 20 years ago and after daily use, it's still going strong. (A couple of side plates hAve chipped now and dinner plates are just beginning to show grey marks - bowls, supper plates, jugs etc still pristine. When we bought it, you could get it at John Lewis. At quick google suggests you need to use Heals now and it's £12 for a dinner plate, so not cheap but not mega expensive,

We have pasta bowls from Sophie conrans portmeirion range. I love the look of them but they are a nightmare to stack in the dishwasher (they are big and irregularly shaped) so we don't actually use those very often.

How about Denby Linen, white with a sand coloured trim? Bounces well.

My everyday plates are the Gordon Ramsay Maze collection by royal doulton - pretty sturdy but nice too. I had 20% off with an Ocado offer too.

I just had a new set arrive today. It came from a catering supplier (Nisbets). They stock ranges for hotels and restaurants. I'm really pleased as they had lots of different plate types and sizes. To suit our style, we went with an old fashioned style got 3 plate sizes + a soup bowl per person. It's a set for 12 and I expect it to be good quality as it's commercial grade stuff.
