Making best of a tiny room

My little room is tiny. Just enough room for single bed and not much else. I could get a small bedside table in but there's a cupboard over the stairs, built in which kind of takes up the rest of the space.
My son hates it. What can I do to maximise the space and make it look bigger? It was fine as a nursery but not much cop as a bedroom

If I had my time again with my two, I would buy one on those beds built above a desk/storage cabinet. There are so nsny bargain buys these days.

Can you do something to elevate the bed over the boxed area and therefore free up the floor space! Some sort of ikea kura bedhack (there are some awesome Pinterest ideas for kura if you Google and you can nearly always pick one up on eBay for very little).

Was going to suggest lifting the bed off the floor. Smaller furniture eg a narrow bed. Look at storage eg we realised recently that drawers are more practical for 6 year olds clothes so we put a plastic chest of drawers in the wardrobe. So she has a hanging rail and drawers without taking up more space.
What does he hate? The feeling/look or lack of space? Where do you keep his things?

My 3rd bedroom is really small about 6ftx6ft so my ds has a bed that's about 6ft high with nothing underneath. He has trofast with toys under there at the moment but then as he gets older and his needs change we can switch them for a desk or whatever. He's got shelves along the rails of his bed so he can have stuff up there too and shelves all up one wall.
It's livable for him now but at some point he's going to have to share with ds2 and I just can't see that it's going to work at all.

We have tiny room- sounds like yours- 2m x 3m with a 1m squared chunk taken out of one corner with the stairs cupboard.

It's expensive, but seems to have everything you need in a tiny bedroom. It will block half the window though...

All good questions thank you! I can't draw a pic just yet and in bed so no photo but think L shape the width of room taken up by the full length of a regular single facing yo as you go in. Along the window. Radiator on right wall, cupboard around and to back of room on left. Like the idea of bed over the cupboard
Just bought new bed but only cheap frame so could buy new. His things are all in under bed crates for shoes/ books/ cuddlies. Main toys downstairs. He's nearly 6. Clothes in my room. Has nursing chair by bed now but can get rid of that (once I emotionally detach it from him being a baby!)
Easy way to do plan and attach? Crap at drawing but will try

We took the cupboard out of dd2's room and built a bed over the boxes area, with some IKEA storage underneath. The room works so much better now.

Window is above bed. Rad is radiator and looks giant but that's my rubbish art!

Could you get a high sleeper bed

Def a bed over the cupboard. Buy a mid sleeper and get someone (joiner maybe?) to modify it to fit over the cupboard but with the foot end as it's intended to be. Use cupboard for toy storage. And underneath bed put beanbag/plastic toy storage. Add a little curtain over which can be pulled to make a fun den. I'd swap the rad for a tall, narrow one and then have space for a tallboy type clothes storage along the radiator wall near the window. Put a narrow picture shelf above the bed on the long wall, to store picture books/torch/drink and have a clip on light on the side of his bed.

I know it's the wrong orientation but something like this, but instead of all the cupboards underneath I'd leave the floor free and access to the existing cupboard?

If your decorating think about changing the radiator to an upright style that takes up just a small bit of dead space behind the door - that will free up more wall space

Agree high sleeper of some sort would give you a lot more useable space, a drop down desk over the radiator for homework / drawing etc and maybe a pouffe style stool that has storage inside for soft toys etc.

Can you offer uninvaded recreational space elsewhere in the house? Save the bedroom purely for sleeping and dressing?

Agree with highinthe sky.
I’m not a fan of high sleepers, especially for children who get up in the night for loo/ nightmares etc. Prefer to keep room for sleeping and provide play space elsewhere.
My DS’s room is similar dimensions. He has bed and compact bedside table. Tall but shallow bookcase squashed in at end of bed. Chest of drawers with TV & Xbox on top. Plus small old classroom style desk. No play space tho but as he’s 10 it’s either Xbox or playing out anyway...

Another idea is to use neutral colours and get a roller blind instead of heavy curtains.

I think short term (low cost) option is to move bedside table in and make cosy and den like. Longer term maybe create him space elsewhere in house. Thanks so much
