Sofas - single seat cushion and back vs separate cushions

Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on single cushion sofas and sofas with fixed backs rather than cushion backs? Like this kind of thing.
Are they more or less practical and comfortable than ones with removable cushions? I've got 2 very tatty DFS sofas which need replacing. The cushions are very worn and saggy in places, but that might be the brand rather than the style.

Obviously, I need to look at/sit on some in real life but I'm just browsing and costing up atm.

if I could time travel, I would honestly use my power to go back and stop myself from ever buying cushioned back sofas. to me they are the work of the devil.
they look so lovely when they're new. the cushions fit together perfectly, but we are only 18 months on and they're misshapen, slouch, and just look a bit sad. I plump and beat them back into shape but the second anybody sits down they just sink.
also because they are movable, I hadn't realised my DD had pulled one off and lay back and smashed my head off the back of the sofa. I cried it hurt. Blush
go for fixed back, get some nice cushions to throw on it. it'll last longer without looking shit Grin

Not sure if my cat will appreciate fixed back sofas, but I'm glad to hear that the general consensus is in favour!

Anyone know if Sofology sofas are any good? I found lots of lovely sofas in SofaWorkshop, but for 3 times the price. I know that my cheap DFS sofas didn't last, but not sure if I can justify spending £3000 on a suite. Any mid-range options?

Fixed back all the way - am currently being driven bloody bonkers by stupid cushion backed sofas and they aren't even that old :/

have a look at sofa sofa. really good service. Very pleased with all the sofas. just the never ending cushion bashing of the loose backed.

Cushion backs & their durability depend on the construction and inner materials used. If it's just a lump of foam (as many of the more "affordable" brands are) then once it's lost it's shape it won't return. That could even by within a couple of years. We have an Ikea sofa where that's happened (only 2 years old), and Ikea have recognised that and sell replacement cushion backs for that model now! A fixed back can be covered by loads of oversized loose cushions that can be replaced and changed when you like....
