Combining pattern and texture (cushions)

I am redecorating my lounge with Laura Ashley Pussy Willow fabric (the pale grey and cream version) and Dulux Egyptian Cotton. Our sofas are grey and curtains are a silvery grey.

I would like to inject a bit of colour into the room, whilst trying to keep a 'country' style theme. Please suggest some cosy cushions that will add colour and texture. I need approx six. I know that if I try to do it, I'll end up with six identical and very boring cushions, which isn't what I'm after! I haven't got a huge budget (but I'm quite handy with a sewing machine, so I'll copycat if I can)!

Can I combine geometric designs with floral? Does it have to be plain? Aarghhhh, I really don't know what will look good! I bought this yellow bobbly cushion cover from Ikea but it doesn't really work - not sure why, perhaps the wrong shade of yellow. Beginning to think yellow is as difficult as grey to find something that's not too green/bright/mustardy

When I bought the wallpaper they had a little bit of the matching fabric, so I bought that to make a cushion or two with to try to bring it all together.

I promise to come back and update with a photo when it's done Grin

What about ochre as your accent colour - like these cushion covers?

That's a brilliant website, Woolybacks, thank you. I like the texture of that one but I'm not sure about the colour. I do like this though. Not sure what else to put with it!

And this.

Would this help to bring the grey in the sofa and the cream in the wallpaper together?

I'd really like something woolly or fluffy for the winter to snuggle into as well!

That's a lovely colour.

Have you got a hearth rug? Lamps? Would a pewter colour lamp work with your colour scheme?

What about this Laura Ashley throw? I like the texture of the cables but if you don't then there are some smooth throws that may match your colour scheme.

The wall paper is old school and the cushion would probably look better in modern or mid-century interiors. With that wallpaper, I'd stick to more heritage colours such as muted green, oxblood, duck egg blue, sunny sort of yellow etc.

Our table lamps are similar to this. Currently grey shades and we have sparkly ceiling pendants.

I love the throw Grin

What I really liked about the wallpaper when we bought it three months ago and still haven't put up is that it had a bit of colour but was still neutral, if you know what I mean! JoJo those are brilliant suggestions for colours, I hadn't thought of oxblood or duck egg blue. In my mind I had yellow, so I'll stick with that for now but I know I'll want to ring the changes with accessories before we redecorate!

Oh, meant to say, I'd love a hearth rug but we have no hearth Hmm I'm also on the look out for a rug that will make the room more inviting. It's quite a big room with a lot of space between the sofa and the tv, and I think a rug could help to bring the two together.

Oh... Looking at the lamp, I reckon you're going a bit more glam/show homey with it rather than traditional? Here are some pics with a range of accent colours used.

The second and third pictures are fab, especially the yellow. I need an accent pouffe (not sure of the right word)!

Will I be able to combine bold geometric patterns with my wallpaper? I know it's all personal preference but I don't want it to look odd!

Showhomey is the look I'm going for, although with two DC's toys all over the place that might be tricky! 😂

Personally, I'm not quite seeing that wallpaper with modern geometric style cushions. I'd probably try more organic shapes or if more modern then quite a subtle pattern (eg a white and pale grey pattern and another cushion in yellow velvet/silk for texture).

That third pic has got a patterned wallpaper and a combination of patterned and plain cushions.

Florals & geometric patterns do work together but it can take a bit of trial and error to get it right. If the yellow works, then try to hints of the same/similar shade in the floral and it should tie in. I used to do cushion schemes pretty much everyday when I was an interior designer in NZ, so got pretty quick at pulling a look together 😊

Here are my two top tips.....

When mixing and matching stuff

  1. they need to be same levels of brightness i.e. either all vivid, or all muted.

Eg you could have bright orange and bright green, but not neon green and pale muted moss.

  2. when mixing patterns: in your head size the patterns between small, medium and large. You can mix patterns next to each other i.e. Small
And medium but not small and large.

Here are some texture ideas from my grey couch. Not much on colour but very cosy!
