Does this look scruffy?

We have just got some new sofas and the only way we have worked out we could store our dvds was to get rid of the cupboard they were in and buy a more narrow bookcase. Do you think it looks scruffy with them all on display? :-(

Having them.on display isn't scruffy but overfilling the shelf and put some on top of the others does, as does the trailing cable on one side. Can you adjust the shelves to better fit the DVDs and use an additional shelf for them too?

Excuse the typos, but you get my drift.

I agree with Wowfudge.
Three shelves partially filled would look better than 2 overfilled.

However, DVDs have a tendency to look "messy" as you have a riot of diffrent colours and designs.
I would put them in the lowest shelves so that they are hidden by the sofa and put the nice stuff on upper shelves

Do you need all the DVDs (if it's bothering you) - we had a good sort out of ours and the put quite a few in those DVD wallet things. They hold lots more in a much smaller space.

Otherwise it looks fine to me, but I am not especially minimalist and think book shelves are for books and DVDs

Second picture better, but still quite busy and I'd be cursing them every time I had to dust them.

Am wondering if you'd consider buying some zippable dvd holders so you could take your films out of the boxes. Would take up much less space and leave you with more shelf space.

It looks better but agree that dvds just look scruffy anyway - it's the plastic cases. How many do you really watch?

Is it a billy bookcase? You can get doors for them

If you think that is scruffy you would not be impressed with my house Grin

Nice baskets/wooden boxes for the dvds, on the shelves? More uniform look rather than the chaos of colour????

Why does it matter?
Can you get to your stuff?
Is it out of the way for you?
Who's coming to your house that thinks this might be scruffy?
Who gives a shit?

It will look better if you balance rather than mirror the shelves. So instead of having a candle in the middle of both, put one at the end of one, and the other at the opposite end on the shelf below.

You can also put some of the more attractive books in stacks, horizontally, to create more visual interest. And hide that wire!!

P.S. Use your photos and other things to break up the books and DVDs so it is all balanced down the whole shelf rather than all candles on one, all DVDs, etc.

I'd just put the DVDs away somewhere - haven't you got Kodi? GrinWink

Grin it does look better. I'm going to rearrange my books now as picture 1 was most similar to my book shelf, except I have lego all over it too

Picture 3 looks much better - i know it is poncy but have a look at how to dress a bookcase / shelves on Pinterest, lots of ideas about making a bookcase look tidy & balanced

It's not scruffy no, it's not great either. I have a large antique hand carved wooden storage box, which is lovely , and keeps them out of sight. Cost next to nothing in an auction. However I'm not a fan of displaying dvds, games or books ( unless its a proper library).

Last pic I promise as I'm sure you lot have much better things to do on a Sunday night than look at several pictures of my bookshelf! Haha!! It's cos it new and we have had them in a cupboard so it annoys me a bit having them all out on display! What do you think to this? Thank you all for your help and opinions! x

I like pic 3 best

Picture 3 is best as the shelves are more balanced looking.

The final pics are tons better! It looks intentional now. I am obsessed with 'styling' my shelves (how sad) so I genuinely don't have anything better to do Grin

I think this is my final answer 😂😂😂 sorry!! Who knew it was possible to be so concerned with how a DVD case looks? I'm getting old!
