Help me- IKEA billy bookcase questions!

I want to know if there's a fixed shelf. Looking at getting some of these for DVD and book storage, but will need to upgrade to 7 shelves. Can they be evenly spaced out? We were going to get built in shelves, but after the quote we had we're hoping these might be a cheaper alternative!

Shelves are not fixed and can be positioned to need.
Just be careful with very heavy weighted books (think uni level science text book heavy). We have lots of spare shelves as it turns out the billy book cases are not too fond of them. We have killed 4 in 5 years, not one at a time as we had 6 on the go at the same time. Fine for normal books, files of paperwork and DVDs etc just not the text books. So you might want consider exactly what you are using for.

We had this size in case that makes a difference.

Yes, the middle shelf is fixed, but looking at mine I think you could get three evenly spaced shelves above and below it.

I bought mine as a cheap alternative to built in shelving and they look great.

My billy bookcase has one fixed shelf right in the middle. All the rest can be positioned as required.

The taller ones all have a fixed shelf in the middle. They come in different widths, so if you have heavy books maybe the narrower ones will support them better?

Have a look at the ikea and the ikea hacks website for ideas how to arrange different sizes to fit the space.

I've looked at ideas, and know what I want. It's just trying to maximise storage out of what we get! The extra height option is no good as our ceilings are not high enough. Those of you who have built them- how easy would it be to put the fixed shelf in a different position (with the use of a drill)?

You can order book cases from
Jali.co.uk too - and specify equidistant shelving etc ! Might be worth a look ?!

No, you can't and shouldn't put the fixed shelf anywhere else. It's essential for the structure that it's there.

We have three of them I put up 🙌🏻 I made the other adjustable shelves all match each other so pushed together, they look good.

The fixed shelf has to go in the one position, but you can arrange the other shelves to suit yourself. I got rid of a couple this year that I had had for 15 years and had been painted a time or two. There was nothing wrong with them, but they weren't due me anything. I got a couple of new ones for a bedroom this summer and its amazing how much stuff we've got in them. We put the heavy books on the bottom, which helps stabilize them, as well as fixing them to the wall.

We have one with the middle fixed shelf with 3 above and 3 below, so 7 in total. The shelves are more or less evenly spaced, and we currently have DVDs on every shelf, so they would fit normal sized paperbacks. Elsewhere in the house we have them with less shelves and big heavy books with no problems and they're about 15 years old.
