Show me your before and after pictures of painting kitchen cupboards???

We are about to move into a new house (hopefully) and the kitchen is probably not somewhere I will spending lots of my time as its completely orange!!!! There are wall to ceiling orange tiles and the cabinets are an orangey wood colour.

The cabinets are really well made and it seems a shame to spend money pulling them out to fit new when they are in perfect working order. We cannot afford to re tile at the moment (cost us just under 10k to move!!!) So I thought about painting the cupboards. Any advice? Photos?

I'd be really interested to hear peoples' experiences of painting kitchen cupboards and tiles - it's going to be a couple of years at least until I can get my hands on a new kitchen so was wondering about doing a quick fix in the interim.

I've been recommended a company called onestop refinishers who spray kitchens in farrow and ball colours. Find them on Facebook to see pics. Looks amazing, done in a day, and costs less than £1k.

There's a paint called frenchic which might be just what you need. They've pages on Facebook and quite a few people have painted their kitchen units. I've just used it for my upvc door and it went on a treat.
They would be able to advise you I'm sure and they seem a friendly bunch.

I was talked out of doing this by someone telling me it isn't the quick fix it sounds like, is sometimes a massive pta and can be hard to achieve a good finish.

That may be bollocks, or you may be more expert at DIY than me, but just fwiw - do read up on methodology! Taking off all doors, really properly allowing enough time for whole job, priming properly etc.

You can buy tile paint as well as kitchen cupboard paint. So you could do both.

When I first moved in there was a lot to do.

Bathrooms and windows were a priority.

The kitchen was solid wood but not my taste.

I had a professional paint it then we changed the handles, taps and I painted the tiles (tile paint) and cleaned the grout. The much hated by me aga had a full refurb.

It looked great - but it wasn't super cheap. To be fair if I'd painted the units it could have been more cost effective.

It made a kitchen I hated into something I liked for about 5 years - long enough for me plan for my "proper" kitchen refurb.

Yes I did get rid of the aga. It's a cardinal sin on MN but I bloody hated it.

You'll be able to do something with them.
I had our kitchen resprayed in the end - cost £3k but we have 24 bespoke cupboards in mis matching carcasses so it was paint or replace. I love the results.
I tried a bit of chalk paint but it was not the finish I was after (although very easy to apply!) so spraying was the best option.

Here's our before and after. Same kitchen units just painted. Horrible dresser has gone obv.

Also painted beams, cheap laminate over floor tiles, cheap worksurface and painted tongue and groove panelling over the wall tiles.

It cost us less than £500 i think and lasted about 10 years before we moved!!

We used farrow and ball paint and probably touched it up twice in ten years. Did it ourselves in a couple of days.

we did it in our old house, we had a good quality wooden doors but they were very orangey pine. I think it cost about £1200 but the company used a good quality paint, changed the handles ( supplied by us) and sent someone to paint the bits we couldn't dismantle. The house is now rented and 4 years on still looks good.
we also changed the sink, light, taps worktop etc total cost about £3000 Inc labour. money well spent.

I did this because the cupboards were good quality. Took about 2 or 3 weeks and used F&B paint.

We will be doing ours in the summer holidays. It's going to be a big job as we've got 42 cupboards/draws to paint! If you're happy to wait until the last week in August I'll post photos!
My SIL used ronseal cupboard paint on hers and it gave a good finish. There are a few paints on the market specifically for kitchen units if you don't want to use F&B.
Ours is currently beech, peach walls and a pine ceiling, so very oppressive (put in by previous owner)
I don't need it to be perfect, but I'm hoping to get another 5 years out of it before we rip it out.

I can recommend Mylands eggshell, have painted my kitchen units with this a couple of times, colour at the moment is Fitzrovia which is a pale mushroom colour previously, was Lambeth walk which is a very pretty sky blue, goes on like a dream & covers really well, gives a beautiful smooth finish.
I'm always banging on about Mylands, as it's not as well known as little Greene/F&B but imo is much better quality.

I'm just about to do exactly the same in our new house until we work out what we can build an extension for a new kitchen.

What type of farrow and ball paint did you use if you don't mind me asking?

It was the interior eggshell.

Wow, Trix your kitchen makeover looks fantatstic.

Our tiles are white with a band of raised detail which at the time we chose the kitchen looked really nice - now it looks dated. I am guessing that there is not a lot we can do about that though so may need to keep.

How easy was it to get a smooth finish in the cupboards?

Cheers. We were quite pleased with the transformation. It wasn't too difficult to get a good finish. The biggest problem was drips forming in the corners of the moulding so just need to watch for that.

Make sure you buy a decent quality paint, we did paint some other cupboards with a b&q paint and it was a total nightmare.

I'm considering painting my kitchen cupboards. They are yellow wooden colour. They are a bit shiny - can I paint straight onto them with something like farrow & ball or do I need to sand them first?
