What's on your stairs?

Is there such a thing as reasonably priced, practical stair carpet that doesn't look terrible? Wise MNers, what do you have on your stairs?

I need to replace the ancient monstrosity of a stair runner carpet that came with the house and is full of holes and fraying at the edges. Need something that can stand up to dogs and babies and doesn't cost the earth, fitting included.

What sort of material should I be looking for? Is there anywhere that also does fitting? I'm pregnant and basically want as little hassle as possible but the world of stair carpets seems complicated!

I have the same carpet on my stairs as I have in my livingroom & dinning room & it's a 80/20 (ish) wool mix carpet. I've had it 5 years & still looks good. It was from John Lewis & around £32 psm on special buy. The service was great. Guy came to the house, measured, gave a few pricing options that day & a number to call to pay & book a fitter once I had decided what quote to use. It probably cost a bit extra but the service was great.

We just have the same wool carpet as the rest of the house. It's fine. It was from a local carpet place and I think it was about £25 psqm laid.

Do you have nice solid wood stairs? I might have done something different if the stairs themselves weren't basic and in need of being fully covered.

Thanks, this is very helpful.

The stairs are solid wood, but at some point have been painted thick gloss white which is now looking shabby, so the carpet might need to cover them completely - either that or they will need repainting and a runner going down the middle.

We don't have carpet anywhere else in the house, so it's almost a case of too much choice! Also I'm a carpet novice.

You could just have painted stairs?

We have wooden stairs. I insisted on oak but TBH they're so noisy I wish we'd gone lower budget and had a runner.
I'd chose thin stripes.

I love the look of painted and wooden stairs but my worries are the same as tickle - wouldn't they be noisy? And painful to fall down? Though I guess any stairs are painful if you fall down them, really.

If you paint them (not terribly expensive to do) and you hate living with it, carpeting over the top is easy. Harder to go the other way.

Yeah, might try it actually. It's carpeted at the moment and I'm slightly dreading what's underneath

Mine is very cheap by Stainaway and is 100% polypropylene and I'm delighted with it. Goes with everything and very serviceable as my mum would say!

Mine is a cheap carpet, good quality underlay and mixed with laminate. The underlay made all the difference feels gorgeous and luxurious

I've just changed my 80:20 wool mix for 100% polypropylene. I like the wool but in high impact areas such as stairs it flattens quickly and begins to look old before it is.

Newer poly is far superior to the synthetics carpets from years ago. It's thick, soft and luxurious and the nap stays raised making it look better for longer. We paid £38 psm from a local independent carpet shop.

Hurray indeed! I have found a local carpet shop who can supply and fit the Stainaway carpets and they're coming round next week to measure and quote! I'm so relieved. If it all works out, Furby I will dedicate the carpet to you and drink your health!

I still need to convince my DH that poly is a better option than pure wool though (which we can't afford anyway, but turns out he's a carpet romantic - who did I marry?), so thanks thanks Tumble for helping with that argument

Ha ha excellent that makes me very happy having done immeasurable carpet ditherings. My carpet man said exactly the same about plastic carpets- a must especially for hard wearing areas- and not shiny and cheap looking as I had feared- have done another type (Invinctus) in all the bedrooms and it's gorgeous and plumfy and so far wearing really well.

And we couldn't afford the wool anyway!
