King or Super King bed?

Right, so DP managed to break our new bed beyond repair by trying to do 'a Bruce Lee' kick flip to get up, you know instead of sensibly just getting out of bed like a normal person. So we need a new bed, despite only buying the current one 6 months ago. We currently have a king size bed but now that DD cosleeps with us there isn't really enough room as we all like to starfish. She still feeds frequently through the night at 7 months so I doubt she will be going into her own room any time soon so we are considering getting a super king.

They are 30cm wider than a king size though, and although we will appreciate the extra space our bed is already wider than the chimney breast it is pushed up against and I don't know if an even bigger bed will look ridiculous. There would be space if I moved the bedside drawers over a bit, as well as to walk around the bed but would it look strange? I am not too bothered about having a headboard as I think that will look weird but the pillows might fall off the back because of the narrow chimney breast. Also going to get a hideous divan base with drawers as we are struggling for storage.

So MN jury what's the verdict? New King size or switch to Super King? Photo attached for clarity as I may not have explained well

As much as I love to star fish I think I'd stick to king size.

Super king is a large increase in width.
Plus you have to buy all new duvet sheets and mattress.

If you stick with a replacement king size you'll at least be able to reuse some of what you already have

Ps - divans are not nessecarily the best option for giving storage as the drawers inside can be surprisingly shallow / small.

I've found by buying a light coloured iron bed, that getting nice storage boxes for underneath, I have more space and the room looks more spacious as you can see more of the floor underneath the bed

Hm, sleep is more important that decor... however, I would move the bed. I tried having ours against the chimney breast and, like in your pic, I didn't like the look and the wasted space. And yes the extra space you get with the superking is really really really worth it so well done your OH for his antics!!!

I'd go superking. We still have DS (5) and DD (7) piling in on a Saturday morning (which I love) and the extra space is definitely welcome...

Love my super king, we have a wooden bed with storage drawers underneath, really don't like divans. We actually have 2 single mattresses that zip together as a super king mattress wouldn't get up our stairs. You will need new mattress, duvet, sheets etc

There isn't anywhere to move the bed to unfortunately, the opposite wall has our wardrobes which wouldn't fit in the alcoves either side of the chimney breast, there is a bay window on the right with a chair and the radiator is on the left wall.

I quite like the idea of a metal bed, it's what my parents had, and my old single daybed from IKEA was metal but I found it creaks and clangs when you are ahem moving about.

I did look at those lift up storage beds but I doubt I'd be able to lift it with such a huge mattress which would render it pretty useless.

I don't mind buying all new bedding, and Super King is more widely available now so they aren't wildly expensive. It's just the base of the bed that is proving difficult to find one I like.

Super king all the way! Got one a year ago and now I am pregnant and use body pillow - extra space is def a bonus at moment.
Sleep is more important to me than decor.

Maybe I could artificially extend the chimney breast with plasterboard when we redecorate then it wouldn't look so strange and I can have the giant bed of my dreams.

An ex had an emperor size bed which took up literally his entire bedroom so you could barely open the door. Don't miss him but that bed was marvellous!

Oh and old mattress will go to use as a spare bed stored in the cellar for when DPs brothers come to stay so there aren't arguments about who gets the proper bed in the baby's room

Super king! Ours will only just fit when we move but I don't care how odd it looks as only family go in there anyway! I'd much rather the extra space with occasional co sleeping and visitors in the morning. You do get spoilt though- king size feels cramped nowN

We've got a superking and I'd never go back to a smaller bed. It's bliss to have so much space, and because DH has got restless legs, I'd be on a murder charge if we were any closer together at night . There's little more cost to the bedding etc from kingsize tbh, and it's easily buyable everywhere. The only thing I did do was to change our pillows to longer bolster ones as normal ones look a bit silly........

I really regret not getting a super king when we moved despite having plenty of space - just didn't really cross my mind...

next bed will definitely be a super king, I think those extra few inches make a big difference, especially when dc come snuggling in!

I also have a horrible divan - but it's less horrible because I managed to buy one that is covered in a sort of plain beigey grey suedey fabric rather than traditional divan / mattress fabric. Means that I don't need to have any horrible valence things on it to look old fashioned. It's not perfect - but as divans go, it's a hell of a lot better than most! And yes, all drawers are not created equal - work out how much space you're actually getting in them. Some people offer one full size drawer on each side - but if you have bedside cabinets then you need to move them and it can be a pain. If you can, get two drawers on each side - a little more in cost I think but it means that there's one drawer on each side you can easily access and then the other one you can use to store stuff that you don't need very often so it doesn't matter so much that it's a pain to get in to...

Super king! It will be so comfortable that you'll barely care what it looks like.

We've got a super king, with zip link mattress. DD (18 months), DH and I all got in very comfortably. Until she starts kicking us in the head.

Also have an Ottoman, it is completely fine to lift up, once you end lifted it a few inches the mechanism kicks in and helps. We can fit so much stuff under there and it doesn't get dusty.

Could you extend the chimney breast and build a cupboard on one side so it's not wasted space but stops the bed looking odd because it's bigger than the chimney breast?

We upgraded from king to superking. Me and the DH can lie starfish without touching, and both kids can fit in too. It was worth having to buy new bedding.

Superking for life! DH and I LOVE ours although be warned if you have to sleep in a double when staying elsewhere it feels like a borrower's bed

We have a super king, and I'd never go back to a king size. Fab to have the extra space. Love it.

Not sure about your chimney breast dilemma tho - could you turn the bed around?

We have a super king and whilst the space is amazing, the choice of bedding is so so limited. I actually envy those who can just pop to Asda and buy a cheap funky duvet set.

Oh super king! Although the covers are really hard to change as they are so big and heavy. Or the other option is to get a cheap cot, take off one side, match up the mattress heights and side-car it to the bed to create some extra room for baby.

Superking all the way - I think it's saved our marriage.

The only caveat I'd add the that is that you probably want to be able to get round both sides so you can get in and out comfortably (ours has a head and foot board).

We have storage boxes under ours, with stuff we don't need very often under the middle.
