Carpet deposit

I had a reputable local company round two days ago to measure up for carpets. I'd already got some samples from another company but wanted to get a couple of quotes. I was quoted a price on Tuesday and he told me that the other company wouldn't be able to beat it and if they did, 'they can have the job'. I paid a third deposit, £660, lo and behold the other company come back £330 cheaper. I have emailed the other company and asked for my deposit back. Are they obliged to give it to me?

It depends on the terms of the agreement with them. Did you sign anything? Why on earth did you pay a deposit before you had all the quotes in? Did you feel pressurised by the guy?

Sorry for all the questions, but I think you need to provide more info. If you were happy to go with the company that is now more expensive you could try asking them to match the cheaper quote instead.
