Need inspiration for DD's bedroom

OK - bedroom for 10yo girl. Don't want to spend a fortune but want to do something cool/fun that will also work when she is older. Found one fantastic look on pinterest and both she and OH looked at me like I was nuts (it was gorgeous - honest - and really simple)

So I need ideas. Fitted wardrobes (white), walls currently white. Carpet beige but not averse to painting floorboards instead. Some other furniture (chest of drawers, book case, desk) which we can paint or not. I think I was so wedded to the look I found I have no idea where to go from there. Feature wall in wallpaper to break up the white? White with coloured bedding and accessories instead? Want it to be simple, not too girly, not too young/old but a really lovely space for her. What's worked for you?

What colours does she like? I'm doing dd's room at the moment and she likes green and pink, so those are my starting points (she's 3 though)

She likes a mix of colours. I'd like something that will last so it rules out current crazes which she will doubtless be lit of within a year or so. Something grown up ie not little girly but obviously not too grown up

Honestly? I would keep in all neutral and let it evolve naturally. My girls had wooden floors and white painted walls except for one feature (both initially went for turquoise, which was handy) and wooden venetian blinds. The colour came from bedding and accessories which they changed about as they got older. A couple of walls and a big corkboard were pretty much collaged in their artwork and photos and posters.

As time went on, one of my girls developed a sort of sari/hot colours theme with orange, hot pink and red and bright bedding, lots of beaded and embellished and ethnic type accessories. One went for cooler tones and greys and subtle blue/grey paisley bedding. She likes simpler accessories in wooden and more natural materials and a windowsill of plants.

Both my girls are very arty and creative: both did A level art, one is doing an art degree, and I think they enjoyed expressing themselves creatively with their rooms.

Why are you asking strangers? Your daughter is 10, it's her room, ask her what she wants. For expensive items if you are replacing furniture then help her to research online within a specific price range but otherwise let her rip with paint colours, just tell her that on no account is she to choose dark paint for room woodwork (voice of experience.....)

Tinkly yes I think this is the way we will go too. Everything we have is white/neutral anyway - was tempted to do a feature wall with paper but this may be limiting so accessories are prob safer.

Oh and daughter has no idea what she wants which is why we are looking for ideas that might help inspire her. Small budget, simple stuff but then simple ideas are often the best

I think it's really nice for kids to have a space that reflects their tastes and passions. DS(10) has pale blue grey walls, pine furniture, lego bedding and a night sky blind. He also has a mahoosive map of the world, film posters, some framed dinosaur prints and a noticeboard of postcards, photos and day out tickets.

He's asked if he can take some stuff down and replace it. And I suspect the lego bedding will go when he starts high school in September. But it's all easy to change.

Well my DD isn't even in her own room yet but I have decorated it so that it will be suitable for years, updating accessories and bedding will keep it current and can be what she chooses.

The room was already painted in peignoir farrow and ball, which is a neutral pinkish grey, with a grey polka for blind over the window so we kept those as they were. There is my old IKEA metal daybed with again my old grey and pink cushions and throws and bedding from my uni room. She can chose her own fun duvet covers later as I accept most kids wouldn't be keen on grey! I bought a Moroccan rag rug which is multicoloured (and machine washable) off eBay. We have an antique wardrobe which I got for £19 on eBay, I sprayed it white and then Jackson Pollok-ed it with multi colours so it is still reasonably plain but is a bit more fun. Getting some multicoloured woven baskets from Zara home for storage of toys.

By having the multicolour bits it means it will last throughout any phases and go with pretty much anything and isn't babyish at all. When I was that age I had a giant pin board to put up my own things, you could get some fabric that your dd chooses and use it to make a covered board and some matching cushions or pin over a headboard to make it more individual, very easy to do with a staple gun and some foam.

Have you let your dd have a look on Pinterest herself for the sort of thing she would like? Maybe better looking at teen room ideas as it will appeal as it is more grownup and last longer hopefully.
