Living Room Layout. Help!

Hi,

I have no eye for colours/decoration etc and need some help with the layout of my living room please.

I'm not sure whether to mount our to above the fireplace (with wires hidden) and have the sofa in front of that. I could then have an armchair/love seat, slightly angled, next to it.

Or I could mount it on the wall to the right of the fireplace but then the sofa would have to go off centre and I think an armchair/loveseat would block the walk through area.

I know how much MN love a diagram so I've attached two diagrams to show the different options.

I'd love a seating area around a coffee table as that's more social but my living room is 5m x 3m (2.7m at chimney breast) so not wide enough, unfortunately Sad

I'd be grateful for any pointers! TIA.

Whats on the wall to the right of the fireplace. Is it just a wall ?

2nd option with a small armchair or love seat under the window

I hate TVs wall mounted - looks awful!!

Colour wise - what do you have you are keeping?

french it's a long alcove and is just a blank wall at the moment.

Astro I'm not keen on them either and I hate that I'm having to choose the layout around a tv! There's 5 of us so we need enough seating to watch a family film together etc.

With option 2, where would you put the tv?

We're keeping nothing! Have darkish bamboo flooring and walls are white.

Thanks.

What about option 2, with a large sofa on the wall opposite the fireplace, and a smaller one at right-angles under the window. You could then have a big coffee table in front of them in the L-shape. The TV could go across the corner to the right of the chimney breast (I'm another one who hates wall-mounted TVs - they're generally too high to watch comfortably).

We have a really similar living room but our door is on the opposite wall. We have a big sofa along the wall opposite the fireplace and a 2 seater sofa under the window, tv on a cabinet in the alcove. It was DH's idea and I wasn't a fan but he was right. (Don't tell him!!).

That's an idea abbey. Thanks.

Wish I had a squarer living room!

3boys Can you still see the tv from the sofa under the window?

I don't mean to sound obsessed by the tv as we don't watch it much with all of us together. However, we do like to watch films together at the weekend - Harry Potter at the moment!

Yes - that's what I was worried about but it's absolutely fine. I thought nobody would want to sit over there but I love sitting under the window now.

Can you get more of a U shaped sofa? Or a curved one?

Go and measure some and mark it out in news paper

White walls are harsh - So I would go and look for a cushion or curtains and go with the colors within that -

Thanks for that 3boys, that's my preferred option at the moment as no tv on the wall.

I will do that Astro, I'm not sure if a curved sofa would be too big?

We went with white as I'm so bad at colour. I thought have white walls and then brighter accessories and furniture. I definitely don't want a clinical look.

Thanks again.

Try not to put the TV over the fireplace - heat and electronic elements don't mix.

Most MN people think TV over fireplace on wall looks like a black hole which TBF if kind of does. Perhaps a dark wall to hand it on might help.

Mine's similar, I have the tv on a wooden corner shaped unit (ebay!)

It wasn't intentional but the glass doors mean that the remote works on the dvd etc and I don't have to get up Grin
