In what order do I redecorate??

Sorry, home decorating novice here!
What order do I redecorate my sitting room? It is a blank canvas at the moment - magnolia walls, wooden floors etc. We live in a Victorian tenement flat.

I would like to

  • have the fireplace retiled
  • paint wooden mantlepiece
  • paint the walls
  • paint built in wooden bookcase
  • perhaps refresh skirting boards and ceiling (white paint looks a bit mucky)
  • carpet the floor
  • replace ceiling light fitting
  • replace plastic plug sockets and light switch with metal
  • hang curtain rail

Please can anyone advise what I should do first? One of my friends said I shouldn't carpet before painting the walls but then Google says to paint afterwards so that carpet fitters don't mark the walls... Hmm

Any advice gratefully received!! Grin

I would tackle the building / fitting type jobs, then painting, then carpets. You don't want workmen, dust & pain spillages all over nice new carpets

Carpets last.

I paint the big areas first as its wasier to masking tape them when painting the smaller areas (eg walls then skirting and shelves with maskibg tape on walls)

Tiling fireplace first. Sockets after paint.

Marks are removed from walls a hell of a lot easier than carpets. Ignore that advice!
